Hello, I'm just looking for a bit of advice on the amount of storage I might want/need for Accordance on the iPad. I'm currently using v6.9.2 on OSX, and hope to upgrade soon (probably after getting an iPad). Currently, it appears that my 'modules' folders add up to a bit under 1GB. On another post, it looked like even with ALL modules, Accordance takes about 22GB. Will my current modules grow when I upgrade or be roughly the same size? I probably won't add a ton of stuff soon, so, I'm guessing my library will stay in this, say, under 5GB size for some time to come. Does that sound about right?

I'm thinking I can probably get away with a 16GB iPad2. My iPod Touch is an 8GB, and It usually hovers just over 1/2 full. So, that should leave plenty of extra space for Accordance as well as Keynote presentations, etc. I do keep most things in the cloud on Dropbox... and I don't do a lot of movies, or try to keep my whole music collection on it. Or, am I just being crazy and should get the 32GB or 64GB? I'm mainly looking for Accordance advice, but wouldn't mind other advice related to storage size either. I'm familiar with iOS through the Touch, but maybe I'm missing some reason my storage needs will balloon on the iPad. At the rate that this tablet technology is advancing, I'm trying to to plan too long-term on the storage, as I'd more than likely upgrade hardware.... and spending $100 to $200 extra for storage is that much $ I won't have for the next upgrade (when the default storage will probably be higher anyway). Unless you plan to add the major photo collections and graphics tools that we now offer, your Accordance won't take up more space on the iPad. However, general advice is always to plan for more space.

If you are on a recent OS X you are crippling Accordance by not upgrading. You won't believe the difference in performance!

I've just begun exploring the iPad; I was fortunate enough to be close enough to the front of the line at our local Apple dealer (not an official Apple Store) to get one shortly after 5 pm the first day. (I actually got *the last* one in the store!) I had intended to get a 32 GB, but the only one left was 16, so I bought it instead. As for Accordance space, 16 GB is just fine. I've managed to fill a good bit of the storage with apps, etc.--and I put on a couple movies just as an experiment, though I'm not into a lot of media stuff (movies or music). Since the memory is *not* expandable, I'd recommend going with 32 "just to be safe" if you budget will allow it. You'll be surprised what you can do with it in terms of apps and the space available will soon seem a lot smaller than you thought. The larger screen makes a Touch or iPhone screen seem pretty dinky by comparison after you've used the iPad for a while. *Some* of the apps that are feasible on the iPad can be pretty large--esp. magazine and news apps--it all depends on how they access/store content. I'm gradually whittling away some of the more egregious space hogs. E.g., some of the magazines that are listed as "free" on the app store (like National Geographic) have only one issue free--and it's pretty big. Then you have to pay for each additional issues you want--and they each add several hundred MB. One of my local papers is free--but it's just a gigantic pdf file in which they've scanned the entire paper, so you have to zoom and scroll constantly to read anything--and it's big also. (That one bit the dust quickly!) So, yes, 16 will work just fine for Accordance; 32 is better long term insurance for other things you might discover.

I just want to say "Amen" to the advice offered by the other two respondents. First, let me encourage you to upgrade Accordance to version 9 ASAP. The jump to 7 was impressive, the move to 9 even more so. You will not believe what you have been missing! The cost is less than $100 (the difference between a 16 GB and a 32 GB iPad).

Second, I understand that everything Accordance currently offers will fit in about 20 GB. That includes the largest modules, like the graphics collections, Accordance atlas, Timeline, etc. One of our resident tech guys recently recommended I consider buying a 32 GB iPad 2 because I use everything in Accordance to create the podcasts. You can check your Mac to see how much space your own Accordance folder is. Figure it will consume about the same amount on the iPad, then make your decision.

My personal advice is to migrate to Accordance 9 now, then purchase an iPad. An original 16 GB iPad can be had for as little as $399; a 16 GB iPad 2 will run $499, the move to a 32 GB model another $100. All of them will run Accordance just fine. If you need video out (for teaching, etc.), then you'll need the iPad 2. If you don't and money is tight, consider the original iPad. Chances are it will still be worth close to what you paid for it when it comes time to upgrade to the iPad 3.

Yes, I do!

In fact, my iPad2 arrived today, along with the other equipment needed to record its screen on my Mac. We haven't been able to produce quality iPad podcasts until this version arrived, because it lacked the ability to output HD video. Using a video camera to capture the screen on the original iPad just wasn't producing the quality we wanted.

I am typing this while waiting for my Accordance downloads to finish installing on it.

Thanks. Maybe someday on the graphics stuff (I do have the maps and timeline, but no photo collections). Yes, I certainly understand that about the performance difference and upgrading! I kind of cringe at launch-time each time I have to fire it up currently.

Thanks, yes, on the magazines, those kind of things can kind of come and go, as long as space isn't too full (need to have some 'work space open for sure). Same with movies, podcasts, etc. for me. The magazine thing is good to keep in mind, as that was something I had not considered.

Thanks on the modules remaining similar in size... that was the big point I needed to know! I certainly hear you on the upgrade. It might not be for a just bit yet, but certainly my next software upgrade. And, yes, I'd rather have the 16GB and new Accordance than the 32GB iPad. Also, I do want the iPad 2, not only for the HDMI out ability, but also for the cameras to video conference. Also, the extra speed and such would be great, as I'm going to be replacing my laptop with it.

Careful! Unless your computer needs are rather limited you will NOT be happy with an iPad as a laptop replacement. It's a versatile unit, but you will be very frustrated doing a lot of things that you take for granted on a laptop. Printing is a problem. File management is not fun. Word processing is not at all user friendly (and you must have an external keyboard if you intend to type more than short emails). There is no good database for iPad. Not all Accordance modules work on iPad. etc. etc. Think twice about buying an iPad as a laptop replacement!

Careful! Unless your computer needs are rather limited you will NOT be happy with an iPad as a laptop replacement. It's a versatile unit, but you will be very frustrated doing a lot of things that you take for granted on a laptop. Printing is a problem. File management is not fun. I will heartily endorse this comment, in that an iPad is wonderful, but for any serious use, it is not a laptop replacement. Just a specialized tool for the things it does.

However, once syncing comes (very soon!) every normal module on Accordance can come to the iOS. The only ones that can't are User Tools, Atlas, and Timeline, and those we hope to eventually be able to bring over too.

I'm kind of a tech 'trail blazer' when it comes to this kind of stuff I guess. (of course now you're wondering why I could be so daft as to not have upgraded my Accordance recently, huh?) Here is an article I wrote about my concerns and considerations. Also, here is a great blog (which I also link to in the previous article) by someone who has taken the leap already. I used to work in IS/IT before my new career in Christian apologetics. Don't worry though, I'll have a desktop that I still do a lot of work on. My mobile needs have just become doable by the iPad, and it has some really great advantages I want to gain. There will be some trade-offs to be certain. (Please do tell of any specific concerns though... as I like to consider them before I take the leap... and on my blog article.)

Also, though I haven't worked with it yet, FileMaker is available for iOS. You'd still have to do the creation/management of the DB on OSX, but FM is a pretty serious DB. I used to work for a Fortune100 retailer, and our entire content management system (which drove the business and web-site) was in FM. Couldn't have gotten there without it.
