I'll reference you to the quick topic I made. Apparently, when I did the last forum upgrade it overwrote the uploads folder where all user avatars and photos are kept. What makes it more odd is that the links assigned to your user stayed intact. Lets say that before you happened to be linking to photo5.jpeg (made up file). That got deleted, but due to my photo being the fifth one to be reuploaded as photo5.jpeg, it is referencing it!
Long story short, unfortunately the old uploaded photo is gone, but if you change it in My Controls at the top everything should be working again.
