Yes, it's been 9 months since we announced the Big Kittel: Complete Theological Dictionary of the New Testament. It took us that long to get the module right. Would someone please comment on the differences between "Big Kittel" and "Little Kittle?" Are the differences merely the absence of bibliographies and extra-biblical references or are the differences more comprehensive than that?

Would someone please comment on the differences between "Big Kittel" and "Little Kittle?" Are the differences merely the absence of bibliographies and extra-biblical references or are the differences more comprehensive than that?

There is a girth of information that the Abridged version doesn't entertain; extra biblical references being one of those elements. The differences vary article to article. In addition, the included information of the Big Kittel presents a better research partner for linguistic/theological relationships.


From the Abridged version: "Philological, archeological, and other supporting materials have been drastically reduced, as well as references when fewer are sufficient. Footnotes and bibliographies have both been excluded; interested students can find what they require in the original articles. The focus is on the biblical and especially the New Testament usage, so that the related classical, Hellenistic, apocalyptic, rabbinic, and patristic fields receive more cursory attention. In the biblical sphere itself the emphasis falls on the theological meaning in accordance with the main purpose of the enterprise."

The second part of the above paragraph is not to be overlooked! Basically the abridged version limits itself to the NT corpora only, and not the various strands of historical-theological interpretation by various faith communities.

If you purchase Big Kittel does it overwrite your existing copy of Little Kittel? Is there any reason to have both?

They are two different modules with separate names, which will not be overwritten. As far as the need for both, I'm not sure; I would probably say that LIttle Kittel is not necessary if you own Big.

Maybe one day TDNT citations in the commentaries can hypertext directly to the place in TDNT. Until that happens, how might I jump directly to, say, vol. 8, p. 344 in TDNT? Thanks in advance!

Our e-text didn't include page numbers, but we're going to add them. But, given it's size it will take a little while to get it done.

Until we get the page numbers added, you could probably create a search to get you to point on your query. For example, you might try search for the verse and the Hebrew/Greek lemma under discussion. The more fields you can include within your search, the more you reduce the probability of hits.

Dear Rick & James,

So sorry to hear that! I hope the page numbers and Go To features won't be neglected, even if someone could initially tag every 25th page it would help immensely, since with (I'm guessing) over 8000 pages in a single module it's kind of tedious (to put it kindly) to locate a 2-page reference such as that under και εσμεν in WBC at 1John 3:1.
