Often times apps will add a custom input row above the keyboard (byword, ia writer, and many others). This would be super handy for search commands.

Hmmm..., that's not a bad idea. I think I'd recommend a row of mixed commands and symbols: <AND> <OR> <NOT> would be really popular, perhaps also <WITHIN ?>. The * symbol is also really hard to access currently. Frankly, I also get tired of switching screens to use a period, comma, or colon, too.

Another app that has incorporated an addition keyboard line is Textastic. It's a great idea.

Yes, this extra row would be really helpful. Very well implemented in Nebulous app for iPhone. I can create my own buttons, assign "macros" to those buttons, etc. See that app and perhaps you can "borrow" some ideas from it.
