One oddity which still seems to be in 1.6 is that on odd numbered days in devotional view and on night settings, the references revert to a day appearance, I.e. they have a white background. Is there a reason for this or is it a bug?

If you open up the module as a General Tool you'll see that this appearance is the result of a background color being applied to the readings for odd numbered days. So this is really a module formatting issue. The only solution is for the module developers to update the module to remove the background color for these sections.
