strange results with character search

I was thinking about the question, "which book has the most questions in the Bible?" for a seminar exercise.

The obvious way of doing that in English (only thinking english at the moment) is to look for the ? character.

So, in the search bar I typed .?

The result, with analysis, is here. (no it's not, I am getting a server error when I try to upload) so the picture is here.

As can be seen, the search actually "hits" more than just the ? character and the analysis shows that there are 13 different forms of ? - which I assume in this search means the extra characters included.

While I have no reason to doubt the results, it makes analysing them more difficult, and it does seem like an inconsistency. I know there are some other issues with character searches.

I believe this is due to the nature of character searches. They find the character in any word, then report the found words. The different varieties of hits you are seeing are due to the different "words" found, which are the different combinations of successive characters. So the majority (2069 hits) are likely the plain ?, while many are the end of speech ?" (940) or other variations. Regardless of these numbers, your table charts should still be accurate.
