library being sabotaged

I'm still having trouble getting to update my modules through Easy Install, especially with the proxy configuration that they have here. I was in touch with tech support, and I've been running Easy Install over and over again, and the majority of those times Easy Install couldn't get through the firewall/proxy.

But if that was't bad enough, what I just realized now is that more than a hundred of my modules are reported to be missing! The icons appear in the Library, but Accordance couldn't find the file. I thought it was just an anomaly for some number of modules, but it was when I began double-clicking on the icons one by one that I got to realize the extent of the problem.

I don't know how it happened, but my hunch is that Easy Install has something to do with it. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Anthony, we've had occasional reports of modules going missing for a while, but we have been unable to find a cause.  It seems unlikely to me that Easy Install is doing it, as it would either succeed or fail, not take good modules and remove them.  In fact, it never does any removing of any modules.  Its possible that something went awry during a Check for Updates, but hopefully that can be fixed.

Your best bet is to spend a bit more time with tech support, as they can often help locate and re-connect your modules.  Since your internet connection is often shaky, our usual advice of "Remove the missing modules and redownload them through Easy Install" is probably not ideal in your case, so I would recommend contacting tech support.

Your other option is to try and reconnect them yourself.  You didn't say which of your modules are missing, whether they are texts or tools, so I can't give too specific instructions.  However, I know you could try looking in your C:\ProgramData\Accordance\Modules folder to see if they are actually present there.  When Accordance says 'Where is ____?', if you simply point it to the proper module, it should fix itself.

Hi Joel,

I tried relinking the tools myself, and here's what I found...

For example, I tried relinking the GNT-T module, and the program gave me this error:

I tried tweaking it, by removing the .acc2 extension, and guess what: it worked.

Now, what I begin to notice was that the modules that were reported as missing were actually the ones with the '.acc2' extension, and I even noticed some tools with two folders, like this one:

What can you make of it?

Tricky indeed!  You definitely should not have .atext or .atool *and* .acc2.  In general, compare between you ".atext" and ".atext.acc2" files and keep whichever folder actually has stuff in it.  If both do, just keep the .atext one.  If the .acc2 one has files, then remove the empty .atext, then rename and more the .acc2 portion.  I hope this makes sense!

Yes, it does. Ok, I'll try this out when I have a bit of time, and I'll let you know how it turns out.

In the meantime it would be interesting to find out how and why this occurred.

Thanks!

At one point I was unable to download modules from Accordance until I adjusted the settings in Virus Barrier -- its firewall.

I wish there were something like Zone Alarm for the Mac, which would pop up & ask me every time something tries to enter my computer from the internet (aside from standard cookies).  Then it would be an easy matter to say "yes" when Accordance tries to download something to me.

I don't know how Virus Barrier works, but does it have a way to notify the user when it blocks a program from sending or receiving information through the network?

It took a bit of time, but now I got the 'missing' modules working again. They were exactly the ones with folders with the additional .acc2 extension. But what boggled me was that there were also some few module folders that had the additional .acc2 extension, but were working fine.

Wait!

I think I got the culprit. It's 'Check for Updates'. After taking the time yesterday afternoon to delete the .acc2 extension to the folders, and relink them to the library, just this morning I ran a check for updates (and the donwnload attempt still got blocked by the proxy), and here's what it did to my modules folder, for both texts and tools:

These are just the first of the list. But as you can already see, several of the modules have their folder names with the .acc2 extension back, and several others with the plain .atext/.atool extension.

From Accordance, I tried double-clicking these modules that had their folders renamed, and guess what: they're "missing", again (!!!). And to get to use them I have to rename and relink each of these modules...again.

So I hope this gets fixed soon.

Thanks.

This is one of those areas that has gotten me multiple times in the past and which has consumed more hours than I care to count tracking things down and manually re-linking/re-adding modules. It would be great that if the problem isn't fixed that Accordance could supply us with a cleaning utility which would ensure after we check for updates that everything is a-ok in our resources so we don't have to spend this time unnecessarily.

Thanks!

Enoch, try Little Snitch

Thanks Jeremy.  I took a quick look.  Am I correct that the Little Snitch only tells you when you are uploading, not when you are downloading.  Maybe I need a Big Snitch.

What I have wished for a long time is that I had a large toggle switch on the side of my computer.  That toggle would turn off the internal hard drive.  After I booted up the computer, everything needed would be transferred to a volitile virtual drive, like the Ram Drive I used to run back with DOS years ago.  Then whatever was downloaded would just go to Ram Drive & vanish when I turned off the computer.  Whenever I wanted to add something to my hard drive, I would have to switch on the hard drive physically.  All new cookies would go to Ram Drive & vanish when I turned off the computer (or did something like "clear Ram Drive."  There are only a few cookies I want to stay in my computer. I do not want every site I go to, to load up my computer with cookies which then are hard to get rid of without wiping out the few I want to keep.  Maybe one way would be if the browser let you clean out only cookies added in the last 24 hours.  All of this leads to my rant as to how there should be a computer called "I AM THE BOSS," which cannot be controlled by Apple, Google, & the rest of them.  Computers end up cluttered up with junk.  Forgive my rant.

Little Snitch will do both for you, if that's what you want.

From their front page:

"Little Snitch not only reveals any outgoing network connection attempt to make sure that sensitive data doesn’t leave your computer without your consent. The inbound firewall in Little Snitch provides you with the same level of control for incoming connections."
