How to link and auto-update tabs?

Hi all,

 

Without success, I have tried to link certain tabs, so they auto-update as I look up new verses in my main window. Here are the cases:

 

1: I would like to have more than one Greek dictionary to open, when I amplify. So I triple-click and open up a second dictionary as well and "tab tie" them together. No success. Am I on the wrong track, or how do I set up acc. to open two dictionaries when I amplify?

 

2: I would like the "Research"-tab to auto-update, when I look up a new verse. Here I am not offered any "Tab Ties" (greyed out). How do I set my select ressources in "Research" to follow my main tab verse?

You will use the LINK command to link the argument in the different tabs, as long as each one is set to the same language. The Tie feature is only for modules organized by Bible reference, so that they can scroll in parallel. It does not update the search entry or the results.

This is the setup I use most of the time in Accordance.  First, create the workspace for your main searching and Bible study.  Then, I recommend you rename the tab in you main window so that it is something specific, so when you use the LINK command it is easy to find.  (Just click the little down arrow next to the tab name and choose "rename tab" to give it a specific name such as "Bible study - main").  Next, to show lexical resources, make a new workspace with your favorite Greek lexical resource in the main tab.  I use BDAG in mine.  Make sure you choose to recycle this window so all lexical searches will go to it.  God od this click the arrow triangle icon in the upper right hand corner of the workspace.  (I also have it add the Scripture reference I am searching in so that if BDAG mentions that reference in the article on the word I am researching it will highlight those references).  Then add take for each other lexical resource you wish to use.  I have tabs for Louw and Nida, NIDNTT, TLNT< and Trench.  On each of these tabs use the LINK command to link them to them main lexical resource.  For me that means my command is [LINK BDAG].  Once this is done, if you triple click a word, it should automatically go to this workspace and go to the article in your main dictionary.  All of the other tabs will then automatically update IF THEY HAVE AN ARTICLE FOR THE REFERENCE.  For this reason I would make sure your main dictionary is something very complete such as BDAG since it will have articles for everything, where something like Trench or TLNT will not.

 

As for having select resources tied to the main bible window search, I have set up another workspace I call "Bible study - resources" that has my favorite English translation, a parallel combined text with Greek/Hebrew, and then below these I have the info pane and my user notes file with my notes on verses.  The tab for my english translation is then tied by to the main tab in my main bible study workspace.  Thus, when I search or move around in my main workspace, my resource workspace moves around with it.  The info pane has my favorite resources already showing, and I have my user notes, along with an English and an original language translation - all on one screen.

Bret, I would love to see screenshots of your setup. Seems like they were not attached.

To get you right: With separate workspaces you mean several "windows" you cycle through?

Sorry - not sure why it did not attach.  Here it is.

 

As you can see, the workspaces I am referring to are separate windows, each of which has several tabs.  I have done it this way so that as I am studying a verse in my main Bible study window, my Bible study resource window is scrolling along with it.  At the same time, I have my lexical windows open, and also one I call OT-NT independent, which has the OT (with English, Hebrew and LXX) and then an independent pane with the NT (English and Greek).  This lets me look at NT texts which are quoting or alluding to OT texts - with those OT texts right beside them.  I have also attached a picture of that workspace.

 

I have made these workspaces the way I like them and just save them.  That way I can simply open them when I begin my study and all of my resources are open and linked to one another.

Looks great. One thing for clarification: The setup here does not seem to use the LINK-feature. Is that correct? Here the tabs are tied together (some of them) and scroll together in the same panels - but no LINK, right?

Those workspaces did not use the LINK command.  That is used in the lexical workspaces.  I am attaching 3 more photos to show a full setup.  I have 1 John 1:5 as my text.  You can see it in the"Bible study - home" workspace with the Greek and English versions (and a bunch of other tabs, some of which are tied to that tab as well).  Next to it in the same photo you can see my "Bible study - resources - home" workspace.  It is tied to the "Bible study - home workspace" as you an see.  This means that all of the resources are scrolling along as I study, as are my notes (which can be seen in the attached photo).  The other photo is my "Greek lexical study workspace" which has my lexicons.  The second photo has the BDAG entry for the Greek word for "light".  This was automatically opened when I triple clicked φῶς in the Greek text in my "Bible study - home" workspace.  (Note that the link automatically highlights any reference to 1 John 1:5 - where I did the search - and highlights it in red, which can be seen about two-thirds of the way down in the screen shot on the right hand side).  The final photo shows the Louw-Nida tag.  The LINK command has ensured that it automatically opened to the corresponding article.

I'm sorry that this is off topic but how do you like the UBS translator's notes?

I find them helpful in thinking through the Greek text.  I have fairly good facility with Greek, but really want to keep digging in deeper as I study and as I prepare to teach.  They are not really a commentary per se, but do give helpful thoughts as to what the writer is trying to convey and how that might transfer into a receptor language.  This is sometimes helpful as I am thinking through how to best capture the "flavor" of the Greek thought.

This is an amazing tip!

 

My Hebrew Exegesis professor mentioned something about tab tying lexicons together and I couldn't figure it out since Tab Ties doesn't work for search terms.

 

I then found your post and figured out you must right-click the search box in Hebrew Entry to pick Link. Then, if you're full-screen like I operate, you must find the monitor that has the pop-up dialog on it so you can pick the lexicon to link to.

 

This is truly a wonderful timesaver and better yet it forces the focus to always be on the current word, which eliminates many potential distractions.

This is a good thread. I have to look up tab ties and the LINK command now as this is something I was also interested in but need to dig further and see if any of my use cases match this.
