redefine all the preferences

Hi,

During lectures today I wanted to check one text and out of the blue Accordance asked for everything from start as if I was a new user. This is not the fisrt time.

Why is it so ?

Yohanan

I've never seen this happen under normal circumstances.  Are you sure you weren't running as a new user, had restored your system, removed Accordance, or done some other system-wide action recently?

Absolutely sure. Moreover, the strangest of all is that all of a sudden it jumped to my last window (BHS Jonah 1), so I was relieved for I could immediately check with the students, but once at home everything appears (right now is the case) with all my preferences lost. So I will have to rebuild the preferences as well as the order of appearance of texts and tools. Anything to do with Apple crashing today ?

Yohanan, when you said "Apple crashed," did you mean your computer crashed? If so, there may be something significant wrong with your machine.

Anyway, trying repairing your user permissions with Disk Utility first. These can become corrupted over time, slowing everything down and, yes, causing crashes if they are corrupt enough.

Timothy, I know it is hard for people to believe that Apple has crashes… But Apple store as well as ITunes crashed yesterday and was not accessible for most of the day, at least for Europe (?). It was in the newspapers and on the web. I only hope Accordance remains independant from the Apple store, once one has downloaded it. (I feel more and more uneasy being confined by Apple, though everybody seems o.k.with that.)

My Mac is doing well, no problem on this side. I do the Utility Disk repair of permission regularly and not a long time ago ( a week or a week and half). The problem was only that I had to reconfigure my preferences (search tabs preferred displays for each of the main panes, orders in the library). Not a big problem, but being asked for my name and institution etc. as if I was registering again, this was a little bit strange and came at the wrong time (I was lecturing).

And there was this crash this morning, quitting "inopinément"…

I will proceed wit one more Repair permissions. But Accordance is working without problem.

Thanks a lot.

Yohanan

That interesting Yohanan. There are at least three different ways to read : "Anything to do with Apple crashing today ?"

I thought you meant an Apple stock price crash actually and went looking for one. Tim thought you meant your own machine. And you meant Apple hosted services. I love language. I don't use Apple hosted services so that didn't occur to me at all.

As to putting all my eggs in one basket - I'm too chicken - er ... sorry for the terrible pun.

I like multi-platform and multi-vendor so your unease makes sense to me.

Thx

D

Hi, Yohanan!

Thanks for the clarification. Yes, Accordance is independent of Apple. Whatever hassles they may be experiencing, it should not affect Accordance on your computer.

People here in the US often say, "My Mac crashed," though I have also heard "My Apple crashed." Both mean their personal computers, which I thought you might have meant in your post as well. Happy to hear that your computer itself is working well, even though you are having issues with Accordance's preferences.

Thanks Daniel, I wonder where to find services for the Mac which are not dependant on Apple Store or ICloud. (For example a  Calendar), though this would require to get in touch on a private level to get some hints from you… When you look for "anything not connected", you get a lot of pages to explain how you could get connected… How do you succeed in not using "hosted services" ?

Timothy, Thanks for the answer, On the Mac at the Office I have not what I have on my MBA, though I depend on a site license at the University. This is probably due to the fact that for a long time until recently my department not reacting I decided to buy by myself Accordance modules and upgrades. So I am lost. What should I do to get the same Accordance things on my Office computer though I use it less often.

Hi Yohanan, I should probably clarify. I don't really use cloud stuff much at all. I use DB with Accordance and so on but that's about it. I prefer multi-platform software that works as close to the same way everywhere, so I use LibreOffice rather than Pages or Word - Word on Mac has it's own issues though there are hints of improvements. LibreOffice is not from the App store but download from the LO website. Same with Accordance. I use Firefox rather than Safari and IE. Of course one gets OSX updates from the app store and the occasional other oddity but not much really. I am now finally getting to the point where some sort of cloud sync point might be interesting but so far my requirement for this is very slight. So I haven't really looked at solutions for this sort of thing really. Curiously I don't really use a Calendar app :)

Currently I just copy files across to my laptop from the OSX desktop if required or vice versa - network copies work fine for this. And I don't do it very often but it is starting to get a bit old so I'll look into options soon when I get some time. At that point I'll no doubt slam into this problem. It's all a matter of how you work. If you need access to the same data at different locations you have to do cloudy something if you don't want to have to work out exactly what files you'll need ahead of time. For me that use case pretty much doesn't exist right now.

Thx
