Martti
Hi, I am currently working on my master's thesis. I am trying to find verbs from the MT that are in imperfect, and see where they are translated as present participles in LXX. I wonder if it is possible to conduct such a search? The problem is the curious expression YHWH yimlok, which is translated as 'kyrios basileuon' in LXX. What am I trying to do is to find if there are other verses where the following equivalence is found: X (subj.) + impf. MT – X + pres.partc. in LXX. Peter Brylov Christensen
Hi Martti You need the MT-LXX Parallel tool and the [MERGE] command for that. Anyway, I went ahead and did the search for you and some background research so I know what I'm dealing with here. So, Ex 15,18 is the only place where יהוה ימלך appears. κυριος βασιλευων appears in Exod 15,18; 1 Chr 16,31; Ps 92,1; 95,10; 96,1; 98,1; Odes 1,18 and are all translated from יהוה מלך in the MT (except from Ex 15,18 (where it is יהוה ימלך) and Odes which doesn't exist in the MT). My search criteria were: Biblia Hebraica (Heb), from the right to the left: [sUBJECT] <FOLLOWED BY> <WITHIN 1 Words> [VERB imperfect] Septuaginta (Greek), from the left to the right: [NOUN nominative] <FOLLOWED BY> <WITHIN 1 Words> [VERB present participle] MT-LXX parallel: [MERGE Heb] <AND> [MERGE Greek] I then went through all the results manually and this is what I got: Job 14,18: וְצ֗וּר יֶעְתַּ֥ק and ὄρος πῖπτον Job 37,22: זָהָ֣ב יֶֽאֱתֶ֑ה and νέφη χρυσαυγοῦντα Job 38,30: מַ֣יִם יִתְחַבָּ֑אוּ and ὕδωρ ῥέον Job 41,11: לַפִּידִ֣ים יַהֲלֹ֑כוּ and λαμπάδες καιόμεναι These are apparently the only places other than Ex 15,18 where a noun (tagged as the subject) immediately followed by a yiqtol is translated with a noun in the nominative immediately followed by a present participle. It is strange that it appears only in the Book of Job, too. Go figure. Anyway, I hope that it helps. Best of luck with your master's thesis! I'm currently working on mine as well.
