Peter Smythe
1 John 1:2-0 1 John 1:2-9 I'm just getting used to dealing with the critical apparatus and wanted to know if someone could help with this. Verses are cited with "-0" or "-9" or whatever. What do those numbers refer to? Is there some kind of footnoting system that I'm not seeing? Joe Weaks
Peter, The CNTTS is a treasure trove and has tons of information packed into it. As such, it has a learning curve. I'd recommend reading the full introduction so you can get more out of it. The section that spells out all the database symbols explains that the "-#" that follows the chapter:verse reference is simply the standard variation unit number: Variation unit numbers are analytical features appended to the chapter and verse references with a dash (5:32-4). Variation units are coded with the following symbols. The -0 come at the beginning of each verse to provide the base text (0) and the lacuna (9) for the verse; the higher numbers indicate relative position of that variation unit among the running total for the verse. The following columns cataloging the type of variation are more helpful.

Helen Brown
Scroll up to the top, or better, open CNTTS in its own window, open the Browser, and it will help you navigate to the section you want.
