Highlight Glitch, Empty Space Counts as Verse

When one highlights certain empty space, this counts as a verse highlight.  I have my preferences set to display verse numbers for each verse; for example, Romans 8:2.  The next verse is labeled with a 3.    If one mouse-highlights "of sin and death" at the end of the  verse, one gets just those words highlighted in result.   But if one extends that mouse-highlight area into the empty space at the right of the verse, extending to just before the displayed verse number, then all of Romans 8:2-3 becomes highlighted, though one never intended that an entire verse should receive highlighting.
