Key Question

I am trying to search for every time the NASB translates the Hebrew root chavah as "worship," which is proving very difficult. If anyone can explain the issue, that would be helpful.

In the process of trying to figure it out, I encountered another issue. Taking Exodus 4:31 as an example, in BHS, it says the root of the last word in the verse is 2—חוה (chet-waw-he) and there is no Key number. However, when I float over the word "worship" in the NASB in Exodus 4:31, it says the key number is "H7812" and the root is "shachah." Is this a glitch, or can someone explain why the root changed?

Thanks for your help,

Ben

quote from the NIDOTTE

ANE Traditionally, the form ‏הִשׁתָחֲוָה‎ was understood to be a hitp. form of ‏שׁחה‎ (and closely related to ‏שׁחח‎ and ‏שׁוַּח‎). But now, upon the discovery of a root ‏חוי‎ in Ugar. (with a form meaning “prostrate oneself”), it is agreed that a Heb. root ‏חוה once existed, of which only this form (the t-reflexive of the ancient causative shaphel) remains. An Arab. cognate meaning “curl up” also exists. The vb. appears at Qumran (1QpHab 12:13; 1QM 12:14; CD 11:24). The LXX almost always translates προσκυνεῖν (TDOT 3:249–50). Such gestures are known throughout the ANE (see O. Keel, The Symbolism of the Biblical World, 308–11).

OT The hisht. form occurs 170x, 45x in the Pent. (23x, Gen), 55x in deuteronomistic hist. (48x, Sam-Kgs), 31x in six prophets (21x, Isa-Jer), 17x in Ps, 17x in Chron-Neh, and 5x in Ruth, Esth, Job.

[Vol. 2, p. 43]

It appears like the NASB has chosen to use the root שחה in place of the Histhtafel?? of חוה

619 חָוָה (ḥāwâ) III, exclusively in the Eshtaphal stem, hishtahăwâ "to prostrate oneself"; "to worship."

Formerly this was analyzed as a Hithpael of שָׁחָה (q. v.). Cognate with the Ugaritic ḥwy "to bow down" (UT 19:no. 847), used in parallel with kbd "to honor," the verb occurs 170 times, in the majority of cases of the worship of God, gods, or idols.

(TWOT)

חוה * II, see שׁחה htpal. bow down.

“חוה*,” CDCH, 109.

CDCH lists it as a new word (the asterisk indicates a new word ie, not in BDB)

Mounce Complete Expository Dictionary lists only two words whose root is SHIN HET HEY, namely, Isaiah 5:23 and Proverbs 12:35 while all other words 173x are listed with the root HET VAV HEY
