Help choosing Accordance modules

Hi everyone,

Just thought I'd create this post to get some suggestions as to what modules I should purchase based on the following needs:

1. Get the most out of the tagging in DCH. I like being thorough in researching the meaning/useage of a word. I like that this dictionary looks at the usage of words in the DSS, Ben Sira and Inscriptions. Can anyone comment as to whether or not having these modules are a must have in order to get the most out of DCH or is it already pretty good as it is? Given that I already have the concise version and HALOT, is there much value added going to the full version?

2. Commentaries: What are the solid exegetical commentaries? I'd like a commentary set (or a few) in which the focus is history, grammar, syntax etc. An example of what I'm interested in reading when I come across an exegetical issue is: Here are all the current interpretations/arguments, here is what the evidence says (as objectively as possible). Based on this, X is the most likely argument etc. No exposition and no theological colouring in arguments would be nice. I'm not interested in theological/doctrinal arguments as I find this to be usually full of straw man arguments.

I currently own in Accordance the Original Languages Collection and the GBS bundle.

Any further recommendations or advice on how to undertake thorough and in depth exegetical studies would be great!

Thanks,

James

Anchor may be the closet to what you want, 2 of my favourites Word and New Interpreter's are both going to likely provide too much exposition. Hermeneia  might be your best option.

I have pasted into a pdf  the 4 i mentioned (even though it is most likely you will not want the first two) to give you a peak at what they have to offer.

Hope this can help a little.

re: #1 I'd say that if you want to research the reference in context, and in more detail, that having the texts themselves would be ideal.

re: #2 I'd say that Anchor or Hermeneia will probably fit what you're looking for. But, I would also say that just because another commentary contains theological content does not mean the exegesis or research aspect of it is not solid. For example, the last passage I did any major research on was in 1Tim., and I found that the WBC volume was spot on in terms of lexical research; everything I needed was right there. I was not as much concerned with the theological content in the commentary because I had that covered already for what I needed. With that in mind, WBC, NIC, BECNT among others would all be solid choices.

Thanks Dan and Rick for the advice,

Dan I read through the samples you provided while I was travelling home from work yesterday. Definitely going with AYB and Herm first.

Rick, thanks for your advice regarding WBC, NIC and BECNT. I will be sure to check them out in more detail.
