Open and Closed paragraphs in the Masoretic Text

Gedalya

Recommended Posts

As is well known, in the masoretic manuscript texts of the hebrew bible, there are two types of paragraphs or parashot, an "open portion" (parashah petuhah) and a "closed portion" (parashah setumah). These paragraphs are identified by either the hebrew letter "samech" or a letter "pey" which indicate either we have a closed paragraph "samech" or an open paragraph (pey").

These symbols appear also in the biblia hebraica version of accordance's hebrew texts.  Is it possible to restrict the search to these symbols alone which indicate paragraphs and not to every appearance of the letters "samech" and "pey"?  (The present paragraph divisions provided in accordance do not accord with the masoretic text paragraphs)

Sure Gordon - try this (in reverse of course)

“=s"

or

“=p"

the peh will try and auto insert a final peh, so select that, and you will be able to select the normal peh form from the “select words” drop down sheet.

Ken,

Thanks!

Now, is there a way to combine the two results so I have a list of both the setumot and petuchot together in one list?

Hi Gordon!

Ken,

Thanks!

Now, is there a way to combine the two results so I have a list of both the setumot and petuchot together in one list?

Searching for the [PARAGRAPH] tag seems to do the trick for me, although this will also list the 9 inverted nuns (which for some reason are written with final nun ן in Accordance), but that is easily fixed if you write the following: (פ,ס)@[PARAGRAPH]

With kind regards

Hi Peter,

I tried your search. It is not including any of the cases from Psalms where you have the final nun alone. The two from Numbers happen to have both the samech and the nun. Are you seeing any of the ones from Psalms ?

Hi Ken,

The verses from Psalms include the results which include the word פִ֭י

”יִמָּ֣לֵא פִ֭י תְּהִלָּתֶ֑ךָ כָּל־הַ֝יּ֗וֹם תִּפְאַרְתֶּֽךָ׃“

(Psalms 71:8 HMT-W4)

which is not what one wants to include in this search!  Only the setumot and petuchot.

Also, I would like to save a workspace which only shows petuchot and setumot in the Torah.  When I re-open the saved workspace in which I searched only the Torah, the results of the search of the entire Tanakh are displayed.  Can I save a workspace which restricts the search only to the Torah and not to the entire Tanakh?

Hmmm - interesting.

"(‏"=?(פס ‎<WITHIN 1 Words>‏ ‎[FIELD END]‏

or the [PARAGRAPH] idea above

or even simpler...just remove the quotation marks....

Should have realised that when I did it. Sorry.

Hmmm. It saves for me. How are you doing the range condition? Are you using a custom range, or the [RANGE] command.

try saving it a session as well. That saves more info than just a workspace...

Ken,

Thanks again.  Adding the Range Gen-Deut saved the range as I wanted.
