Limit to Hebrew

I want to find out how many verbs are in the Hebrew bible, excluding Aramaic. I realize I can define the range  manually (although I’m not sure how to handle Dan 2:4 which is split in the middle), but is there a simpler way to do this?

(I would have thought [range Hebrew] and [range Aramaic] would be among the default choices, but they don’t appear to be.)

Hi Susan,

Check out this discussion of Heb. and Ara. ranges http://www.accordancebible.com/forums/topic/15522-regarding-an-aramaic-search/?do=findComment&comment=75004.

I agree it would be nice to have this predefined but absent that, the search range set on the exchange could be augmented to include the ranges, though you still have to modify the searches themselves to deal with the verses composed in both languages, or manually exclude them later in analysis of the results.

Thx

D

Thanks, Daniel. I’m apparently not very good at finding old discussions on this forum, sorry about that. That’s very helpful to be able to pull the text from that post to define the ranges.

Seems like this would be a pretty easy one for Accordance to implement -- including a default range that actually accounts for the complexities of the verses that are split. I think I’ve overspent my quota of feature requests recently, but maybe I’ll come back to that one.  :)

For anyone who wants to copy them, I’ll reproduce them here using colon notation for verses (I got an error with commas, presumably a setting somewhere):

Hebrew range: Gen-Jer. 10:10;Jer. 10:12-Dan. 2,4;Dan. 8:1-Ezra. 4:7;Ezra. 6:19-Ezra 7:11;Ezra 7:27-2Chr

Aramaic range: Gen. 31:47;Jer. 10:11;Dan 2:4-7:28;Ezra 4:8-6:18;Ezra 7:12-26

Note both are inclusive of Dan 2:4.  All credit to PChris.

I'll add it as part of our custom ranges file and upload it to the exchange in a few hours. Good idea!

I'm glad you're finding the no/only Aramaic ranges useful, Susan! (Although I guess I should've used the American notation system rather than the European one. Force of habit, I suppose.)

Oh, and many thanks for uploading them to the Exchange, Ken.

With kind regards

If you want to be really clever, you can just exclude the aramaic terms.

so

*@-*_0

in reverse of course, and the _ becomes the overscore (same keypress but in the search bar becomes the overscore)

You can then use this search (using the CONTENTS command) to search or exclude these verses. (or HITS to include/exclude the lemmas)

Actually, I just realised that the Search Ranges file we have uploaded already has an “aramaic passages” section in it

It lists it as

Dan 2:4-7:28; Ezra 4:8-68; 7:12-26; Jeremiah 10:11

I know this is not as exhaustive as your list Peter, but Gen 31:47 is only a single word in a verse

So I am not sure why I would add in Gen 31:47...

To do the non Aramaic passages, you can do this as well. * <NOT> [RANGE “Aramaic Passages”]

Oooops, I didn't notice it though I did look earlier. But it looks like the Ezra verses might be off - the current range shows 4:8-68 rather than Peter's 4:8-6:18.

Thx

Back when I made these ranges, I wasn't sure whether Gen 31:47 should've been included either, but I guess I didn't want to leave anything Aramaic out, even one little word. Dan 2:4 was problematic for me, too. Using *@-*_0 is pretty smart, by the way. I'll keep that one in mind!

Ken has come the closest to a simple solution, but he's still making it harder than it needs to be. There's no need to mess with ranges, HITS, or CONTENTS. Just search for every verb except the Aramaic ones. Like this:

[VERB]@-*_0

The [VERB] tag finds all verbs, and the at-minus-underscore-0 excludes all Aramaic lexical forms.
