Susan
I’m working in BDAG, attempting to search a lexicon entry for Greek text. My trouble is that it doesn’t seem to recognize different inflections of the word I type in the search bar. This is in contrast to any search I do in the Biblical texts, which always find all inflections. My basic question is: how do I tell it to search for any inflection? My example: I’m in the entry for καλός (Greek entry field) and I want to search within that entry for ἀγαθός (Greek content field). It gives me no hits. I can instead search for αγα*, and that works: This identifies ἀγαθῇ and gets me what I need here, and in general it's probably a fine approach for adjectives, but not optimal solution for words that inflect in more complicated ways. What am I missing here? Thanks!
Helen Brown
None of the tools are "tagged" in this way, i.e. the words in the text are not linked to the lemmas. Using wildcards is your best option.
Susan
Thanks, Helen. I guess I wouldn’t expect every word in the lexicon to be tagged. I just thought maybe there was a way for the search term to be associated with all of its forms. But using wildcards can probably get me most of what I need. Also I noticed that Dictionary of Classical Hebrew, where this type of searching may be most relevant (due to the very long entries with lots of associated Hebrew lexemes), translates everything into English, which is much less morphologically diverse so probably would make searching with wildcards easier.
