rwrobinson88
So, I've created what I would of thought to be the best construct search for this but my results are off. I'm new to using accordance and the construct search, so I'm open to learning how to do this better. I just don't understand how it missing some of these. My results definitely have some false hits and don't even have some hits that seem to have to be in it. How is that not in it when I clicked the "search both directions" button? Here is the entry on this in BDAG, "β. foll. by the acc. w. inf. (Ps.-Callisth. 2, 4, 7; TestAbr A 17 p. 100, 4 [stone p. 48]; TestJob 23:1; 24:7; BGU 27, 13; POxy 891, 12; Josh 10:14; EpArist 59; 64 al.; Demetr.: 722 Fgm. 1, 5 al.; Jos., Ant. 12, 124; Just., D. 2, 4 al.; Tat. 19, 1) ὥστε τὸ πλοῖον καλύπτεσθαι Mt 8:24. Cp. 12:22; 13:2, 32, 54; 15:31; 24:24 v.l.; 27:14; Mk 2:12; 4:32, 37; 9:26; 15:5; Lk 5:7; Ac 1:19; 14:1 (οὕτως ὥστε); 15:39; Ro 7:6; 15:19; 1 Cor 5:1 (of such a kind that, cp. Mt 8:28; Mk 1:45; 2:2; 3:20; 1 Cor 1:7; 2 Cor 3:7; 1 Th 1:8; MPol 2:2b; GJs 19:2; 21:2 (codd.)." According to their references, there should be 36 hits for this and I can't seem to get this to come back for my in a search. Any help here would be great. Mark Allison
I don't think "search both directions" is what you want. It's going to find the lexical form at the beginning of the phrase or at the end. It's not going to transpose the infinitive and the accusative. There can be intervening words in your construction, so you'll want to constrain those as well. I'm sure there's a more elegant way to perform this search, but this should get you close. rwrobinson88
Thanks Mark. That is helpful. The only thing is there are some false results (1 Corinthians 14:39 which has an imperative). And then there is the real odd one like Romans 15:19 ὥστε με ἀπὸ Ἰερουσαλὴμ καὶ κύκλῳ μέχρι τοῦ Ἰλλυρικοῦ πεπληρωκέναι τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τοῦ Χριστοῦ, which would have to be "within 10" which takes us up to 51 hits which definitely starts adding in some more false hits to sift through. Maybe I just have to live with the sifting through. I was hoping for a bit more precision though.
rwrobinson88
But, I will say, after I took it up to within 10 on ὥστε - any accusative - verb infinitive, the 51 results were pretty good. After working through them there were only a couple that didn't work and working through them is actually good for the brain to think through some things like word order/information structure. Thanks again.
Mark Allison
Note that you can eliminate some of those false hits by using the "INTER" command and negating it. In the example below, I've eliminated any intervening imperatives from the Infinitive-Accusative construct.

Marco V. Fabbri
Here comes a screenshot of a Greek construct search that make use of the syntax add-on module to search for ὥστε Clauses w/ infinitive and accusative. Marco V. Fabbri
If you have the syntax module, the search is made easier. Within the books that are ready, that is from Matthew to Galatians, and from Jude to Revelation, you will be able to find all the instances of dependent clause that start with ὥστε. Yo need to: open a Search window and set it to GNT28-T open a new Greek construct window in the construct window, select a green Clause item from the left column and drop it into the blank space you will be prompted to choose what kind of clause you want: select dependent and adjunct select a blue LEX item and drop it into the Clause, choosing the first column of the Clause select a Green Subject item and drop it into the Clause, choosing the second column select a purple ANY item and drop it into the Clause, choosing the same column where the Subject is you will be prompted to enter a grammatical tag: enter Accusative hits the search button You may add a further column, in order to restrict the verb to infinitive, but it is not needed, as the accusative subject already requires an infinitive verb. I hope this helps. Edited November 21, 2015 by Marco V. Fabbri
