Missing verses from search results

Why do hits from the following command entry sometimes (not always) omit entire verses which should show up in the hits results? For example, in the NA28 the command entry

 [RANGE eph 4] <AND> ([ADJECTIVE] <OR> [ADVERB] <OR> [ARTICLE] <OR> [CONJUNCTION] <OR> [iMPROPERPREPOSITION] <OR> [iNTERJECTION] <OR> [NOUN] <OR> [PARTICLE] <OR> [PREPOSITION] <OR> [PRONOUN] <OR> [VERB])

should return every word in Ephesians 4 since the command entry covers every part of speech, but the hits omit every word in Ephesians 4:23, giving a total of 476 hits. By contrast, the command entry [RANGE eph 4] <AND> *  rightly gives 483 hits, which includes the 7 words from Ephesians 4:23.

Likewise for the range Mark 3, in NA 28 the first command entry misses every word in Mark 3:2, 3:15, 3:17-18, 33, so it only gives 475 hits instead of the 546 hits from [RANGE mk 3] <AND> * . However some other ranges work ok, for example, using the range of Ephesians 1-3 gives equal number of hits using both methods.

(I tried the Textus Receptus also and the first method also misses Ephesians 4:23, while missing Mark 3:2, 15-18. )

Hi Antony,

I tried your first query against "NA28 Greek NT" and in 11.1. it appears it's no longer valid syntax. You need to replace the <OR> with a comma in every case. Once that's done the query returns 483 hits - that is all words in Eph 4. I got similar results against TR, Westcott Hort and EPT.

What version are you running this on ?

Thx

D

Daniel,

How did you find out that the <OR> command is invalid syntax in this case? Did you receive an error message, or by some other means?

Thanks,

David

Hi David,

It popped up an error dialog telling me to change the <OR> to a single comma. I believe it's only invalid in that context - within ( ).

Thx

hi Daniel,

thanks for the post. I'm using the latest update 11.1.2 on Mac Yosemite. I don't get any errror message at all when I cut and paste the following command:

[RANGE eph 4] <AND> ([ADJECTIVE] <OR> [ADVERB] <OR> [ARTICLE] <OR> [CONJUNCTION] <OR> [iMPROPERPREPOSITION] <OR> [iNTERJECTION] <OR> [NOUN] <OR> [PARTICLE] <OR> [PREPOSITION] <OR> [PRONOUN] <OR> [VERB])

But I just tried changing all the <OR> commands to commas, and you're right that gives the correct number of hits:

 [RANGE eph 4] <AND> ([ADJECTIVE] , [ADVERB] , [ARTICLE] , [CONJUNCTION] , [iMPROPERPREPOSITION] , [iNTERJECTION] , [NOUN] , [PARTICLE] , [PREPOSITION] , [PRONOUN] , [VERB])

That works for Mk 3 as well, in both NA28 and the Textus Receptus. But I still don't understand why I get different results with the <OR> command, without any error message.

Actually, no it doesn't work because although using the commas instead of <OR> gives the right number of hits, the graphical analysis default analytics from the comma method just lumps all the words into one big list, instead of grouping them according to their part of speech. My whole purpose for using the long <OR> entry command was to get a list in graphical analysis default analytics of all the words in a given range grouped according to their part of speech.

Antony, why don't you use the Analysis Graph set to Part of Speech?  I was trying to figure out why you were constructing your search in this manner.  Also, if you set the Range condition (using the + button) rather than [RANGE], the results work properly.  It has always been a bit difficult when you string so many commands together.

Hi Joel,

Thanks for the post. I meant a list in default analytics  in which the words were grouped according to parts of speech, I wasn't referring to anything graphical. I corrected my typo above. You're right it works if I set the range button using the + button, and then use the <OR> commands, with or without the parentheses at either end. Thanks.

Ok and to wrap up the <OR> versus comma I cannot repro. the error I was seeing and either syntax runs, though giving different results as noted above. I will open a separate topic on the issue of the error dialog when I work it out.

I see your point on the analysis display though. I never knew they were different.

I get this for <OR> :

Joel, when I add PrtSpeech to the output in the analysis tab I just get one group "no direct translation". Is that correct ?

Thx

Daniel appears to have found a bug where dragging the PrtSpeech item into the analysis isn't currently working - says "(No Direct Translation)".  This bug has been fixed for the next rev.

Anthony, once you are able to do this, you should get exacly your results.  Run your search as a simple * [RANGE Mark 4] search.  Open the Analysis analytic from the bar chart looking icon next to the hits.  Then, type Command-T (or use the Gear menu) to Set Analysis Display.  If you drag PrtSpeech above the leftmost LEX item column, you'll get a nicely formatted result like so (looks better in the program):
