Locking or rotating loses place in reference tools

Tim Campbell

Recommended Posts

When reading reference tools on v2.3 (iOS 9.2.1, iPad Air) I find that locking and unlocking or rotating from portrait to landscape (or vice versa) results in the text scrolling back to the last place I browsed to.

I do not observe the same behaviour with texts, though I have not tested exhaustively.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open a reference text (e.g. NIGTC);

2. Browse to a particular location in the text (e.g. Matt. 21:1);

3. Scroll down several pages as though reading (e.g. to comments on Matt. 21:12, which is past the next major heading);

4. Rotate iPad from portrait to landscape.

OR

4. Lock iPad then unlock it.

Expected result: Text location matches whatever was at the top of the screen at step 3.

Actual result: Text location matches whatever was at the top of the screen at step 2.

Hey Tim,

Thanks for all the detailed info. I will try and reproduce this and get to the bottom of it.

Yes Chris (& Tim), I was having the exact same problem and was about to post a new topic.

Basically what seems to happen, is that if I rotate of switch apps, its taking me back to the last main section header, which could page a few pages back.

Thanks for looking into this.

Paul.

@Paul, I find that it will go back to the last location I browsed to, which may be even further back than the last main section header. i.e. if I browse to section 1, then read through to the end of section 3, it will go back to section 1.

It's definitely a regression. It shouldn't go farther back than the beginning of the topmost paragraph.

Hey Tim,

Good news! I've been trying to do more reading on my iPad, but this bug was slowing me down.

Shouldn't be too far away, since we're just doing general bugs fixes and improvements.

Chris, I downloaded the latest update (8th March) and the problems still exists.  On rotating the iPad, I'm losing my position.  It really is quite distracting, if if temporarily jump to another module, rotate or switch off device, to lose my reading spot.

Yes I noticed how annoying this was yesterday as I was reading on the way home while on the train. On a long section you can go back many pages and it happened quite a few times. As you say not fixed in the latest version.

Hey Paul and Steve,

I'm not able to reproduce any issues with this. Could you send me the steps to reproduce the issue. Keep in mind that the pane(s) are expected to go back to the top of the current section/verse you're reading when rotating, closing/opening the app, and/or switching modules. I apologize for the frustration.

Yes, Chris.  I see your point, that things have vastly improved and the 'location point' behaves in the way that you say.

However, that said, some commentary and dictionary articles (even for a single verse)  can be pages long in themselves.  It seems unusual that the location point has to revert at all.  Would it not make sense only to revert back to the top of the last used screen location?  That seems to be the standard in most other digital books.

Your thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Paul.

Paul,

I admit, we do need to make improvements. The location is reverted because we have to resize the panes and we have no fail proof way, at the moment, to know exactly where you were in your reading. That being said, I understand your frustration and we'll definitely have to address this in the future. We're working on a feature that will likely add better handling of the exact reading location. I can't make any promises, but I will definitely look into making improvements.

It should be going back to the top of the closest paragraph. If it is jumping farther than that I would consider that a regression.

Hi Chris,

On my iPhone 6 'Accordance for IOS' 2.3.1 works as Scott describes - jumping to the top of the paragraph if the screen is rotated or you exit the tool and then re-enter. It would be better if it could be current location but it is OK.

On my iPad 2 for the same version of 'Accordance for IOS' then it does not work as Scott describes. I'm currently reading Worshipping with the Fathers and having tested it just now what actually happens is quite odd. I exited the tool then went back in and it went to the top of the paragraph that I was currently on which is what Scott would expect. I then paged forward an number of pages then rotated the iPad. When I did that it went back to the paragraph that it had been on when I first entered the tool. The same thing happens if I go back a number of pages - it goes forward to the paragraph I was on when I first entered the tool.

Even if you go passed a heading into a new section it still goes back to the paragraph I first went in on. This appears to be different to what was happening yesterday on the previous version - which seemed to be going to the previous section heading rather than paragraph. If you enter on a bookmarked heading it will always go back to that heading when you rotate.

The same thing happens on other tools I've tried (Parade of Faith, Pillar Commentary, Anchor Dictionary).

If you use the table of contents to go to a specific heading that becomes the new point which rotating will take you back to.

Steve,

I wasn't aware that it was a General Tool that you were having this issue with. I was able to reproduce it. This is a regression that fell through the cracks on my part. I guess I assumed this was only an issue with Reference Tools in the secondary pane. Sorry about that, I thought I covered all bases. I'll get it fixed for our next release.

Hi Chris. That's fine. As long as you now know what the issue is and can fix it then that's great. Gives me something to look forward to on the next version. Will just have to make sure I set my iPad to lock the rotate when I am reading for the time being, that should reduce the problem.

Another work around is using the arrows to navigate to different sections. It properly saves your location when using the arrows just not when scrolling. Hope this helps for the time being.

I concur that the original issue is *not* fixed in the latest update... I can still reproduce using the original reproduction steps on my IPad Air :-(

Hey Tim,

The issues are the same, I got the issue you mentioned confused with another similar issue reported where the reference tool's was in the secondary pane. I didn't address the case where the reference tool, or any tool, is opened by itself. This will be fixed in the next release.

Chris, just to say how much I appreciate Accordance iOS and the work you're putting into this to get it just right.  Few developers would be giving us this level of personal input and feedback, (with near immediate responses).

Thank you.

I Found that in sacred bridge, if i open a picture or map and rotate the screen, when i return to the text, that sort of fixes it so that next time i rotate the ipad, it jump backs to there rather than right back to the beginning. Similar to using the arrows.

(Just opening a photo doesnt fix the point)

Reduces the amount of scrolling!

;o)

Just wanted to stop by and say thanks for fixing this issue in the latest release (2.3.2). This will make reading on the iPad a much more pleasant experience :-)
