Amplifying a Hebrew word to find definitions root words

Ruth Ann

Recommended Posts

I'll clarify that I am not a student nor a scholar, only a reader of the Bible using original texts at times to deepen the meaning of the text.

I recently upgraded to Accordance 11 with some difficulty. Purchased a new MacBook Air with Capitan and the upgrade then went smoothly.

I have always used the Greek and Hebrew lexicons and learn so much more as I read the Bible on Accordance. I frequently will highlight a word in the Hebrew text and go to 'amplify' and down to open all the 5 lexicons of Hebrew I have on the program. Then find the meanings and root words of the word I am researching. It's been such a delight to learn in this way.

But now with Accordance 11 when I highlight a Hebrew word and go to 'amplify' and on the drop down I can click on only one lexicon, and clicking on one lexicon I get the message that the BDB-or any of the other lexicons I try-is not available to Accordance. (I attached a screen grab of the message.)

I can copy the Hebrew word, open a new workspace using one of the lexicons and do a search for the word. That works. But it's too many steps.

Very frustrating.

How do I research with the lexicons now? Either something is wrong with my Accordance or it the program has been made more difficult to use in this way. Or I am missing something!

Any help sure would be appreciated.

Hello

I'm not from the tech support but maybe I can help you.

First delete the modules which didn't work in the library post-32723-0-65922200-1461529321_thumb.png and install it again with easy install.

Second go to the Help menu and go to Setup-Assistent post-32723-0-78632400-1461529044_thumb.png. In 11 you have to choose there your preferred Heb or Greek tool post-32723-0-81302900-1461529076_thumb.png.

Third be sure that the chosen tools are in the library on top of the responsible area. So BDB lexical or what you had chosen before on top of the Heb lex like in 10.

With the new right click you got a lot more possibles so you can now search in the new Research with more options post-32723-0-21641600-1461529161_thumb.png.

Greetings

Fabian

I see right now Mark is looking to this Topic too, maybe he has a better solution.

Thanks, Fabian, so much for your instructions. I'll try these.

So I must choose one of my 4-5 Hebrew lexicons? Can't use them all?

Hi Ruth, not in tech support, but a couple of things....
1. Fabian's suggestion should work, though it could end up being a little tedious. Apart from a full reinstall though, I don't know what else to suggest.
2. I am not sure how you were doing your Amplify before. in order to Amplify to multiple targets there are only two ways I know it can be done. The simplest is making a user group worth your lexica in it. Then you can just Amplify directly to that user group. If you need help doing this, let us know and we'll post or point you to some instructions. The second way involves keeping all your lexica open and joined using the LINK command. I suspect this is not what you want.

Anyway, let us know what you want and we'll do our best to help.

The reason why you have to put your selected one from the Setup-Assistent on top is, that if Accordance found no entry in the first it goes automatic to the next, till to bottom. If your selected one is on the bottom then only this is displayed.

Sorry I don't know how to open all  lex that you want in one time.

But on the Mac you can toggle between the lex with ctrl and arrow down or up after triple click. Except the "Glossary of Targum Onkelos

Glossary of Targum Onkelos (Onkelos Glossary)

A Glossary of Targum Onkelos

Electronic text hypertexted and prepared by OakTree Software, Inc.

Version 1.1" will not work because they had first Title and then Aramaic. Please Accordance change this.

You may want to consider creating a workspace that contains all your Hebrew Lexicons (or at least the ones you normally use). I've created one and called it "Hebrew Lexicons". Then, simply right-click on the Hebrew word you're interested in, go to "My Workspaces" from the contextual menu, and select "Hebrew Lexicons" (or whatever you've named your workspace).

Ruth Ann:

Thanks for posting here. I have cleaned up some of the duplicates and typos in this topic.

If you still have problems with a module not being available, please contact tech support. You may have modules in 2 or 4 locations, and that needs to be cleaned up.

I agree with Mark that saving a workspace with your lexicons in zones or tabs is the cleanest way to look up a word in all of them.

Ken, in Accordance 10 and before, I would click on amplify and drop down on the opened window to use Hebrew tools. I had the option to use 'all'.

Thanks for your post, Helen.

I'll try to find any extra modules and remove them.

As I told Ken Simpson, in Accordance 10 I was able to highlight the Hebrew word in my Hebrew Bible and go to Amplify. In the drop down I would go to Hebrew tools and was able to choose 'all'. These would appear in a new pane and I could go through each one to read the various definitions and roots. I sure miss this function.

Haven't had time yet to read this all and try doing everything. But I will get to it.

I'm afraid I now have trouble with the complexities of the software. And I have so many of your products!

Ruth, you'll find this is done easily (and in many ways much better and faster) in v11 by doing Amplify -> Research -> [Hebrew Tools], or via the right click Research -> [Hebrew Tools].

Mark, thank you very much for sharing this workflow. That is a really helpful way to gain a quick overview.

I am intrigued by these kinds of workflows/shortcuts that I see from time to time here on the forum. I would be great one time to do a thread on "best workflows" to share the many clever and powerful ways, Accordance can be tweaked.

I have placed my Hebrew tools into a grouping named 'Hebrew tools'. This now shows up in 'research'. And it works!

I highlight my Hebrew word, go to research and on to Hebrew tools. A window opens with these lexicons! I've done the same with the Greek.

Thanks all! And I"ve learned about those workflows, Mark. Thank you all. I was pretty anxious that I couldn't get the lexicons to work with these words. Now, I'm set.
