Accordance Turabian Footnote and Bibliography is Confusing Me

Hello,

I usually do all my Turabian footnotes and bibliography by hand. I decided to see how well it works in Accordance today and found myself quite confused with how it is doing the footnotes. For example I just opened up Eerdmans Dictoionary and selected some information from "James" as a test. Here is what I get for footnotes:

Eerdmans Dictionary of the Bible, s.v. “JAMES,” 669.

It is not including any authorship prior to the book title. Why is this? My teachers would not accept that at all. It also does not contain any publisher information. Turabian requires publisher information with the first footnote citation, it is only subsequent citing of the same source that can omit publisher information.

However it seems that the Bibliography is correct:

Freedman, David Noel, Allen C. Myers, and Astrid B. Beck, eds. Eerdmans Dictionary of the Bible. Accordance electronic ed., version 3.5. Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2000.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks for your time.

Hi there,

A couple explanations here:

1. The current release of Accordance does not support extracting the author name from a dictionary / encyclopedia, nor Journal article. You need to insert that on your own. However, I am happy to say that v. 11.2 will support this (a free update to Accordance which will be available some time in the relatively near future).

2. When the citation feature was designed, we chose only to support the full citation, not an abbreviated one, such that you can typically use after the first citation. With reference works like dictionaries, to my knowledge, you are not required to include the full publication details. For Turabian see §17.5.3. However, if your professor requires you to include the full publication details in the first note (based on her or his interpretation of Turabian), then that is up to you to comply with.

I hope this helps to explain things.

Hello Rick,

Thanks for the explanation. That helped clarify everything. Cool to hear about version 11.2 as well.
