Get Verses services in Microsoft Word’s List Styles

Hi all,

I have a Microsoft Word (2016) template I use for sermons. It uses the list styles (e.g., I, II, III, A, B, C, 1, 2, 3, etc.). Unfortunately the Get Verses services doesn’t work while you’re in a list.

Any chance this bug could be worked out? Doing the same exact thing in Apple Pages works fine.

Thanks, friends.

What is the verse ref and text module in that example?

I don't have Word 2016, so can't test it, but is that the only context it isn't working?

Hello Joe

With the latest Word 16 all other functions works great, except the "Insert". So the Insert verses works sometimes and the second option: "Insert from any text", I can select but the insert itself didn't work properly.

I found out to insert verses I use the Accordance own service and for the other 3 I use your solution.

Greetings

Fabian

When I can, I'll be interested to see the issue and the solution for the services.

On a side note, I have in the past ported the Insert Verses service into Microsoft Word native script (i.e. VBA) previously that some are using. I don't know if it works for Word 2016, though.

Hi Joe!

Thanks for making this feature possible. I use it so much!

The issue/bug still exists in Word 2011, I just checked. I also checked Word 2008, but I couldn’t get services to pop up at all.

The issue doesn’t have to do with the verses I chose, but the outline feature. In fact, I wonder if the issue has to do with a hard return affecting all of Accordances services. That is, if a hard return is present inside the section of text you’re highlighting it doesn’t work. If you manually select the text (ensuring the hard return is not present) it works fine. The problem is that if you just type the text into a line by itself, only selecting the text, Word automatically includes the hard return whether you meant to include it or not.

Thoughts?

Someone previously reported the "hard return at the end of selection" break for Word 2016. It does not break it in Word 2011. The code for the Service handles the trailing whitespace, so I'm curious why it does not for Word 2016.

Word 2016 (aka 365) does have some idiosyncrasies but I have found ways to work around several of them. One of the most frustrating is the "Query-Insert" that I use all the time in Keynote and in Word 2011. You actually have to select a space for it to work in 2016.

Joe has rendered such an enormous service with the creation of the Services scripts. As such I would like to propose someone creating a "GoFundMe" page for Joe to provide him a copy of Office 2016. Its only $125 from Amazon and BHPhoto to express our thanks for what he has done. I will be glad to provide the first $10. I hope Joe is agreeable to this as I am personally thankful for what he has done.

Thanks for the appreciation, Tony, but no thanks on the funding. :)
