Cataloguing Updates

Being new to Accordance, I am wondering if it is possible to make a backup of the downloaded updates so that if a reinstall of the OS is necessary in the future, I will not have to re-download the updates. This is important to me for two reasons: (1) I have already had a hard drive in my MacBook die on me and (2) I will be upgrading to Snow Leopard soon and I prefer to do a clean install. The ability to save downloaded updates would also be beneficial to Oak Tree Software by potentially minimizing unnecessary downloads when they allow for complete downloading of updates in the future. I realize that it is possible to use Time Machine to back up the Accordance folder but then it also backs up the entire Applications folder, something I would prefer not to do just to back up updates for one program. (I keep versioned .dmg files of all programs on a separate drive.) Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think it would be easier to back up the Accordance folder with its hierarchical organization of modules (for Time Machine's sake, this might be one of those cases where you might actually want to have /Accordance folder at the root of the hard drive instead of in /Applications [which I assume you have excluded in the TM prefpane]). This way you wouldn't have to re-enter all your unlock codes or re-establish the locations of modules when you restore Accordance after a clean install.

I think you can approximate a clean install of the Accordance application after such a restore by deleting ~/Library/Preferences/Accordance Preferences and re-specifying your preferences with the "first run" assistant.

Thank you for your advice. I guess I will have to think about relocating the Accordance folder to the root directory. I just found it neater to place it with my other applications. If I did relocate the Accordance folder to the root directory, and if I also wanted to have the Accordance application in the Applications folder, would I need to then make [and place] an alias [in the Applications folder] to accomplish this [or could I just put the actual application in the Applications folder]? Thanks in advance for your help.

Never move the Accordance app out of its folder, always make an alias or put it in the dock. It's fine to meove the entire folder.

Thank you, Helen. I thought that was the case, but I couldn't remember.
