How to open map in a new workspace and not a zone

Hi,

I'm wondering if there is a shortcut key or something to force a map (File->New->Map) to open in a workspace and not a zone. This question

obviously extends to opening any tool (timeline, search text, etc).

For me, I don't find it helpful at all that a map (by default) opens up in a zone as I want a map to be a little bigger than 10x10 pixels (exaggeration).

I should add: I know that I can detach the tab after opening it up in a zone. However, I'm wondering if its possible to change the default opening behavior through a modifier.

Thanks,

Stephen Young

If you hold the Command key when opening a map from the Library or Resource Palette will force it into a new workspace. I'm not aware of any specific menu commands or alterations to the menu command File -> New -> Map that do it, but I'd think it'd be much faster to just select the map on the resource palette with the Command key down. Likewise when opening from the Library.

I happened upon this post and it made me suggest something.

Using the command key does indeed open up into a new workspace. I was reading one resource and it had an embedded photograph. Clicking on it caused the image to open up in a new zone. So I thought that command-clicking would cause it to open up in a new workspace. It still opened up in a new zone in the current workspace. Is there a way to open photographs or charts into a new workspace? Wouldn't command-click be a possible behavior to explore?

Thanks,

Stephen

I am not aware of any way currently, though it is a good idea.

In the meantime, if you have your photo window already open and detached, if you set it to recycle, it will update with any future clicks and even bring itself to the front if necessary.

I fail to see the "benefit" of opening a map or timeline in the same workspace or zone unless you have a 32 inch monitor!

I have used the File> New > Map option for years to open a map in a new tab. Losing this option means I will not be upgrading my other Mac to Version 9. In fact, I now sorry that I "upgraded" my laptop. Is there any way of getting Version 9 to be as useful as Version 8?

You can set the Preference: General to default to only one zone. This will open the maps and other items in a new tab in the one zone just like before.

Helen,

Thank you VERY much! I was about to pull my hair out (OK, that would really not take all that long).
