Impossible Search?

Recommended Posts

I'm definitely not an expert in the search features of Accordance, but I'm pretty sure the search I want to do is impossible. I can't think of a way to do it.

I would like to find all of the verses where Jesus is speaking--you know, the red letters. :) I can't think of any search that would get all of them.

Am I missing something or is it impossible?

Thanks

Yes, I'm afraid that there is no way to search on the red style of the words of Christ.

I don't necessarily mean searching on the red style. I just want to search everywhere he is speaking.

But thanks anyway. :)

Brett,

You can get pretty close. All you need to do is define a new Search Range that includes all the verses where Jesus is talking. It will include some 'other' words, sure, but not much. Someone has surely published a list of "All Red verses in the NT" somewhere. Just a matter of finding it online, copy it, clean it up, and paste it as a new Search Range.

Hi Brett,

I did this years ago using Biblegateway.com. Not up to speed on Accordance yet, you can use Accordance in place of my biblegateway steps below:

For example, I brought up the entire

  • Gospel of John,
  • Print view
  • Select All
  • Copy
  • Paste into Word
  • Within Word, search/replace to remove all black text. In the "replace" box, type nothing at all, or a space

Note that in Biblegateway, you must have preferences set to show red text, and turn off footnotes.

I also further stripped the Gospel of John from all verse, paragraph, and section headings, using search/replace for heading and font format styles, so I had a reading of all Jesus words in John as free of editorial intervention as I could. This will be easy to do within Accordance before you even copy your text to paste into Word.

Obviously, you can do the above using Accordance, assuming the Text you want to use has red letters. I agree "the words of Jesus only" is probable online somewhere; I wanted ONLY his words with no editorial headings, verse and chapter markings, plus, the challenge of creating my own "Jesus Only" Gospel of John. If you PM me, I'll see if I can e-mail you the one I have in ESV; I think I have it with the verses and so on, then stripped of everything but His words. Unsure if I'm allowed to attach it here due to copyright.

You're spot on, Miss Keene. If you can't find a ready-made list of all verses that contain Jesus-speech, you can create your own.

Once you've copied and pasted, you just need to delete all lines that don't contain Red, and then delete all text but the verse references, clean those up, and create your own custom search range to enter.
