I'm not sure if I understand * in the Search Window. But sometimes when I bring up Accordance there is nothing in the main window -- it is just blank. Now in that situation, if I try to bring up a version, I get nothing. Then if I put * in the search window, I get the text but in all red letters as if I had told Accordance to search for everything & mark everything red, which is useless. It would be nice that if one put * in the Search window, it would just bring up the version designated.

* is a wildcard marker. So in words mode it searches for all words (which is why all the words turn up red), and in verses mode it searches for all verses.

Using * in verse mode is the way to display the entire text.

Mac 10.11 (El Capitan)
iOS 9 (iPad & iPhone)
Windows 10

The reason yours comes up blank is that you've set Search windows to default to Words mode in the preferences. Since theres no 'common' word to search for, those windows are created empty. For search windows defaulting to verses, it comes up with the * in verses mode, thus easily displaying the entire text. I'd recommend switching your default if you'd prefer new windows to come up in verse mode.

While Joel is certainly correct about how this preference works in Accordance for Mac, it does work slightly differently in Accordance for iOS.

When you create a new text search view (by choosing a text in the Library view), Accordance for iOS will always run an initial search in "Verses" mode for the wildcard character (asterisk). The result of the search will be all verses in the text. The preference comes into play when you open the search interface for the first time in the new view. The "mode" of the initial search interface is set by this preference.

So if you are launching new search views that come up blank, this is probably some type of bug that we need to track down. If you have a reproducible case it would be great if you could describe it here.

Thanks very much to all of you. I checked prefs & found it was set to verses. I wonder if I got the blank result because the last search I had made was a word search. At any rate, I will try to remember just what I did to get the result next time this happens. It may well be an operator error.

Thanks again
