Diane Richards
In the Bible class that I teach, we are studying the seven trumpets. We are currently looking at the seventh trumpet in Rev. 10:7. I'm getting the idea from accessing BDAG and Wallace Greek that melle can mean begin, as opposed to about to begin. But I am not fluent in Greek and Hebrew. I am just trying to use the tools. I would like to acquire more abilities in Biblical languages though. Is there anyone that is a member of Accordance Forums that could help me and give me some direction on the word melle in Rev. 10:7?
Bret Hicks
It has been a while since I looked at this word, but I will give what I remember. The word often refers to something that is soon to begin, but this can not be pressed. There are instances where it is used to refer to people or events that are hundreds or thousands of years distant. For examples of where the word is used to indicate people or events that were centuries or even millennia removed, see Matthew 11:4; Acts 17:31; Romans 5:14; Galatians 3:23; Colossians 2:17. Thus, context really has to determine how much the term is carrying the nuance of imminence or how much is has the idea of simply being at some point in the future. In other words, the term mellw will not be enough to determine the correct interpretation of Revelation 10. Hope that helps. In Christ, Bret
