RE: Accordance Syntax Module on PCs

Hi,

I am a brand new user of Accordance on my PC...I purchased it because I wanted to further my language studies especially Hebrew...I am a very beginner in Hebrew and trying to understand the big picture including what the various "grammatical phrases" mean....I am wondering if I should purchase the syntax modules (for both Hebrew and Greek)...would it help me understand the sentence structure more clearly..my intent is to get to the "original meanings" and not get hung up in all the details (I know they are still important but I am not trying to memorize)....any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Frank

PS I have read Robert Holmstedt excellent article "Understanding and Using the New Syntax..." and it kinda made sense to me...I am willing to work with the terms...my heart is to study His Word deeper...not to become a Hebrew or Greek "scholar" (which would never happen ...trust me)...what attracted me to Accordance is the Hebrew/Greek language tools..

I decide to purchase it today (4-26-2011)..so I am starting the adventure...it would be nice if "tool tip" would identify what the syntax components are as I put the cursor over them...I will just have to figure it out..I like the general approach....thanks to all who are working on this product!!!

Hi Frank,

I would be interested in your thoughts on how useful the Hebrew syntax module is for someone with limited Hebrew knowledge. I'm very slowly teaching myself Hebrew (only have a few lessons done so far) and haven't decided whether or not to get the Hebrew syntax.

Thanks,

Jonathan

Frank,

Welcome to Accordance and to the wonderful world of syntax study. In your comment about the "tool tip," are you wanting the syntax definitions to pop up? If that's what you want, then the Accordance folks have already done it: when you put your cursor over a label in the tree diagrams, the instant details box provides the definition of that label. In the screenshot below, although you can't see my cursor, it is hovering over the first "C" in the trees and the instant details provides the definition of "C", and also the highlighting tells you what Hebrew material in that verse corresponds to the C.

Robert,

I just discovered the "tool tips" for the syntax module in the "instant details" area last night...they are a great help!...I was going to correct my post today....thanks so much for your hard work...I am a novice to Accordance but what I see I really like...I am like a pre-K kid in a graduate level course in college...I am really impressed with the search capabilities of Accordance...I even think they will do Equidistant Letter Sequence searches but am not sure about that completely... Thanks again Frank

Jonathan,

I understand your situation...I recommend the following for speaking and verbs, etc http://hebrewworks.com/ It cost under $100.....my neighbor is a seminary student and so I have been learning some things from him....I select an entire verse and use the parsing tool to paste into Word (I am running the PC emulator)..print it...I then print the syntax to a jpeg file .....I am just starting with the syntax module ( both modules cost $110)..I have had them less than a week) but I like it...I know nothing on Greek yet....my goal is to understand the "basic rules of grammar" without getting bogged down in details (I use Accordance for that).. I purchased it knowing my "limitations" and will keep you posted...maybe some other more experienced users can also help.....BTW, the Accordance help files are execellent....I also like the video training but I am not aware of any training on the syntax modules.......Frank
