Where to start with Hebrew?

The Jewish levels look great, but I'm brand new to studying Hebrew and have no idea what I would want or need. I know I want the old testament in Hebrew, but it looks like there are a couple of options for that. I would like to pick up a coupled of products to get started, and then possibly move up to one of the Jewish levels as I progress. Any thoughts on what I should start with? If I purchase a few products now, will I end up spending more if I upgrade to one of the Jewish levels because I will be purchasing products twice? What are the must have items to get started?

Help please!

Edit - I should have said that I have the premiere library collection & the graphics resources DVD.

Hey James,

Several things came immediately to mind:

The first thing to keep in mind is that as a beginner you should focus on a mastery of rudimentary aspects of Hebrew Grammar. For this, a good intro Grammar is needed, and a Hebrew text. The Jewish Level (Advanced) will aid in you meeting such a goal. It encompasses the BHS-W4, a morphologically tagged text, and a lexicon, BDB, amongst other things. I would recommend that upgrade to the BDB Complete, however.

Should funds prevent this investment, I would recommend you purchase the BHS-W4, BDB, and a grammar of your choosing (ideally a introduction grammar, such as, Ross.) N.B.: Dr. Holmstedt offers his and Dr. Cook's grammar as a free PDF download on his Blog. As you progress in your competency in Biblical Hebrew, you can add modules as your heart is inclined.

Secondly, If one day you plan to include Greek into your repository of knowledge, I would then suggest that you consider the Scholars Library. Depending on your goals and time devoted towards mastery of grammar and syntax will factor into your decision on whether to purchase the Standard or Premier.

It sounds, however, that the BHS-W4, BDB Complete, and Ross would meet your needs. You just need to decide to what extent you want to learn Hebrew, and then factor in the savings that several of the packages offer.

Cheers,
