Liddell & Scott Improvements

I just noticed that when I tried to look up a word in L & S Lexicon by auto-link, the system declared that the word was not in L & S. However it is. The reason is that in classical Greek lexicons the full form (instead of the koine assimilated form) is listed, as for example classical γίγνομαι, instead of koine γίνομαι.

Here are a couple of examples from L & S:

QUOTE:

προ-γίγνομαι, Ion. and later -γίνομαι [ῑ]: f. -γενήσομαι: aor. 2 -προὐγενόμην: pf. προγέγονα and -γεγένημαι: Dep.:—to come forwards, τάχα προγένοντο quickly they came in sight, Il.

II. to be born before, exist before, Hdt.; οἱ προγεγονότες θεοί Id.; οἱ πρ. ἄνθρωποι former men, and οἱ προγεγενημένοι Xen.

2. of events and the like, ταῦτά μοι προὐγεγόνει Plat.; τὰ προγεγενημένα things of old time, Thuc.; προγεγενημένοι πόλεμοι, καιροί Id.

προ-γιγνώσκω, Ion. and later -γινώσκω: f. -γνώσομαι: aor. 2 -έγνων, Ep. inf. -γνώμεναι:—to know, perceive, learn, or understand beforehand, h. Hom., Plat., etc.; absol., Eur.

2. to foreknow, N.T.

II. to judge beforehand, Thuc.; to provide, Xen.

UNQUOTE

It would improve the L&S Lexicon module to link γίνομαι and γινώσκω (with the related forms that prefix prepositions to the verbs) to the unassimilated forms in L&S.

While I suggest additions to Accordance, someone surely must have already suggested including the big L & S, in addition to the medium sized one.

It also would not be bad to include the small L & S. I say that because the small L & S gives the editors' opinions of what is the "prime word" for the collection of lexemes that are "derived" from it. Of course such terminology is not linguistically defensible (IMHO) because there is no way to show that before a noun existed a related verb existed or vice versa (or that for example, the present tense existed before the past tense). But regardless of the truth of the matter, these editorial opinions from a bye-gone era are interesting. The small L & S shows what is regarded as the prime word by putting it in all capital letters (upper case).

Not sure what the progress on the Big Liddell is, but Accordance is planning to release it at some point. The project does appear to be a touch behind schedule.

Yes, we removed access to that page intentionally! :)

Fortunately we have begun work on the complete 9th edition of LSJ (unabridged), but without the supplement (for now).

As to the current "Intermediate L & S": Is this the latest edition? It doesn't look like it to me.
