I am studying about Judaism and wonder if there is an easy way to display the 613 mitzvot in Accordance...I have the JSB, JPS, JPSS and KJVH...also JPS dictionary....none of my resources list these..I would like to be able to automatically list and identify these as I study the Torah....any suggestions??

Thanks for your help!

I am not aware of a list available in Accordance or any text marked up with the mitzvot.

Helen,

I am playing around with options..I have created one user note file and then copied from a web source the 613 mitzvot, then I have to manually make links, click on the verse and highlight in the translation I want it to appear.....I only have textedit and mellel for word processors so I appear limited in options.....does this sound like the way to do this??

Thanks

Frank

You would be better off making a user tool with your own study notes and verses. User tool import will automate a great deal of the formatting if you use styles in a document and export to HTML. I believe NeoOffice (an open source editor) supports export as HTML. You can then import the *.html file into Accordance.

James,

I purchased NeoOffice and "converted" the 613 mitzvot and saved it as an html file...however, I can not get Accordance to recognize it as a html file..I have tried everything I know...I have watched Dr. J podcast about importing user tools and I am fairly sure I have the file copied into the proper directory...but I can't get it to work..I have spent all day on this....any suggestions???

Thanks

Frank

I somehow got the html file to import into the user tool but none of the Scripture links works...it looks like I will have to manually edit these....the Scripture format is

The following are the 613 commandments and their source in scripture, as enumerated by Maimonides:

Fundamentals of Torah

1. To know there is a God — Ex. 20:2

2. Not to even think that there are other gods besides Him — Standard->Ex. 20:3 Yemenite->Ex. 20:2

3. To know that He is One — Deut. 6:4

4. To love Him —Deut. 6:5

5. To fear Him — Deut. 10:20

6. To sanctify His Name — Lev. 22:32

7. Not to profane His Name — Lev. 22:32

8. Not to destroy objects associated with His Name — Deut. 12:4

9. To listen to the prophet speaking in His Name — Deut. 18:15

10. Not to try the LORD unduly — Deut. 6:16

When I click on the html file it opens up in the web browser....what am I doing wrong...

Thanks

Frank

Are you importing the HTML file into Accordance as a user tool? Accordance will not directly recognize an HTML file. After starting the desktop version of Accordance, select the File menu then User Files then Import User Tool from the menu. This will walk you through the process of importing the file into Accordance as a User Tool.

Frank:

As Greg mentions above, you need to import the .html file into Accordance. To see what HTML is supported, you can consult the award-winning Help Files (Digging Deeper > Creating Your Own Modules > User Tools > HTML Import to a User Tool). I believe there is support for Scripture links through the import process, so as to automate the hyperlink. I am not entirely sure, however. Try importing and see what results you get.

The one caveat with importing scripture is that it will not recognize the link if it is book and chapter only. Example: Lev 23. As long as you have verses indicated along with the chapter and follow the conventions listed in the help article, James helpfully pointed out, it should work pretty well.

James and Greg,

Thanks for your replies and suggestions....I was using the user tool to import it...I will try it again and let you know..

Frank

It imports as a user tool (html) but the links for the Scripture verses are not there..see my above post for an example of what I am trying to import....I don't understand why it will not work.....

I think I found the problem..it does not like the space between the book ref, chapter and verse...

If things are not working out as expected, it's good practice to open the .html file in a text editor. All word processors have a method for exporting. Some html syntax may or may not be supported in the Accordance import. A great deal of this sort of thing is patience and curiosity, as you learn what tags are supported and what syntax is required.

James,

Thanks for your help.....I did get an html file imported with links that worked..this is not an easy process...I can't even figure out how to change the name of my user tool....it will not allow me to change the name in the library window and I can't seem to find the file....so I am taking a break for now...I appreciate this user forum so much...thanks to everybody who helped....God bless!

To change the name, you need to remove the User Tool from your Library, via the Library Window. Then, access the file through Finder. You can find all your user tools in ~/Documents/Accordance Files/User Tools (assuming you've not moved these folders). Find the to-be-renamed tool, rename at and then double click.

James,

I finally have a user tool with the right name in the right directory...I had to create a new user tool and then merge the old user tool into my blank one....it has been a learning experience....

Thanks for your patience and help..

Frank

PS in the user tool, the Scripture does not show up when I mouse over the link (like all other Accordance resources) ...I have to click on it...I assume this is the way it is designed to work...

The user tools I have created automatically show the verses in instant details when you hover over them, just like the other resources. Then if you click on them it shows the verse in another pane.

Steve,

You are correct...I had instant details turned off....this user tool creation has been a challenge for me....I still have to go verse by verse in many of the 613 Mitzvot because I want to use the JPSS as my study Bible and some verses are different....thanks for your reply
