Epictetus was a Greek Stoic philosopher (AD 55-135). No writings of Epictetus himself are really known. His teachings, however, were transcribed and compiled by his pupil Arrian (the main work being The Discourses). Eight discourses were compiled in Arrian’s Discourses of Epictetus. Of the eight discourses, four have been preserved in their entirety along with fragments of the other four. The books did not have a formal title in ancient times. The Discourses were first printed (in Greek) in 1535.

This module contains tagged Greek texts of the following works:

  • Enchiridion -The Enchiridion, or Handbook of Epictetus, often shortened to simply “The Handbook,” is a short manual of Stoic ethical advice compiled by Arrian.
  • Discourse One - One of four “talks” that have been preserved of the original eight discourses recorded by Arrian.

This module is formatted to run in parallel with Elizabeth Carter’s English translation (EPICT-E) (which is included with the purchase of this module.)

2/10/15 Update: The 2.0 update adds Discourse One along with Arrian’s preface to the Discourses addressed to Lucius Gellius.
