Details

The Gospel of Thomas, a collection of words of Jesus, is one of the most significant extrabiblical texts of the early Christian era.

This 1996 edition presents the tests in the classical languages and provides an English and German translation and notes with cross-references. It includes:

  • the complete Coptic text
  • the text of the Greek fragments and a Greek retranslation of all logia with the parallel texts from the canonical gospels
  • an English and German translation
  • notes by the translators with elucidation, background information, and alternative translations, and crossreferences

The introduction and notes do not assume knowledge of the classical languages, making the Gospel of Thomas accessible to a broad audience.

Dr. Uwe-Karsten Plisch is a renowned specialist in extrabiblical texts of the early Christian era (2nd/3rd centuries). He participates in the German translation of the texts from Nag Hammadi.

I am a bit disappointed by this edition.
Yes, you get what you see, but you don't get the book shown in the product information above. The picture — I'd say is a bit misleading.
In the book are very extensive remarks about the proper translation, about interpretation and much more that isn't part of the accordance-edition of the text.
For that the price is quite high. If you don't urgently need the text in your computer for further work I would rather recommend the book.

Furthermore there are some really bad glitches in the german text — displaced or badly formatted verses that disturb the order of the text from thomas 52:2 to 82:2 and then again at 113... It should be fixed easily (and fast!).

[edit: March 2013]
The mistakes in the edition are fixed now. Everything is working well. The notes are very helpful for the understanding of some passages. The full commentary is still missing but I suppose it was never meant to be part of this release.

I raise the rating to Okay now.
