The Holy Rule of Saint Benedict

The Holy Rule of St. Benedict (The Benedictine Rule) is a book of precepts written in the 6th century by Benedict of Monte Cassino as a guide to communal monastic living. This work holds the first place among monastic legislative codes, and was by far the most important factor in the organization and spread of monasticism in the West. It includes practical and spiritual instruction in monastic living as well as guidelines for the administration of communities.
