Troubleshooting

Installation and Other Problems


Install order

Q: I need to install or reinstall a bunch of Accordance CD-ROMs. What is the correct order?

A: In general:

  • In OS X install any CD-ROMs with Accordance 5.7 or above in any order. See the Install page for details for older CD-ROMs.
  • In Classic install any CDs with version 3.x, then 4.x, then 5.x up to 5.6.1. Then install any CD-ROMs with 5.7 or 6 in any order.

Installer or Updater password

Q: In OS X the Updater or Installer is asking for a password before it even opens. Which password?

A: Your own password as a user of the Mac OS X (you do need to have administrator privileges).


Unlock codes

Q: Where are the unlock codes I need?

A: This depends:

  • Some CD-ROMs, such as the Library, are packaged with the code for the purchase level inside the folder. You only need to check the level, not the items that are included in your level. The installer will need a code for each item you check. Those other options are shown in the installer to allow for custom unlocks.
  • Your invoices from OakTree list all your new codes in the Description column. You should keep the invoices for future reference in case you need to reinstall.
  • If you have free Bible unlocks with your package, you must tell us which Bibles you want and we will supply the codes, these are not automatic unlocks.
  • If you have lost old codes, you can contact us to get them emailed to you.

Installer won't run on non-English system

Q: Why do I get I/O errors when I try to run the installer on my Mac which is set to Chinese?

A: Please switch the language on your Mac to English while you run the installers. Accordance should work fine with any language setting, but the installers themselves do require the System Preferences to be set to English


Accordance in Applications folder

Q: I prefer to keep Accordance in the Applications folder. Will this work?

A: Yes, Accordance 7 and up will run in Applications, but please move the entire Accordance folder, not just the Application. Accordance 8 installers will install into Applications for a new user.


Installing new modules

Q: How do I install new modules?

A: You must add each NEW text and tool module to make it available to Accordance before it will appear in the pop-up menus. All the newer installers do this for you automatically when they copy the module to your Accordance folder.

To add a module yourself, click the Add button in the Library (Arrange Modules) window. The standard Macintosh dialog box appears allowing you to select a file name. If the module is "locked", you will be asked to enter a password. After adding the first new text, the same dialog box will automatically appear again to allow you to add another module, until you click Cancel. The new modules are added to the pop-up menus.

You can also add new modules by selecting the name from the dialog box when you choose Open (File menu or -O).


Dock icon

Q: How do I get an icon for Accordance in the Dock?

A: Sorry, OS 10.4 (Tiger) no longer lets the installer put the icon in the Dock for you.

In any OS 10 you can remove any old version icons by dragging them out of the Dock. Then you need to find the latest version of Accordance in the Accordance folder (we put this folder on the root level of your hard drive). You can either:

  • drag the Accordance program down to the Dock where it will create an icon, and then click the icon to run the program, or
  • double-click on the program to run it and put the icon in the Dock temporarily. While it is running, click and hold the mouse on the icon until you see a pop-up menu, then select Keep in Dock.

Accordance won't open

Q: Suddenly I cannot open Accordance at all. Why does it seem to crash immediately?

A: You probably have a startup session file that has become corrupt.

  • in OS X go to user/Library/Preferences/Accordance Preferences (in Classic open the Accordance Preferences in the Accordance folder)
  • trash the file named Startup session and relaunch Accordance
  • you may need to redefine your startup session (another reason to back up the Preferences folder).

Download won't unstuff

Q: I downloaded a .sit or .hqx file but I cannot unstuff it. Where is StuffIt Expander?

A: Apple does not include StuffIt Expander anymore in OS 10.4, which is why we now offer many downloads as .dmg or .zip files. If you need it, you can download StuffIt Expander free.

The BasiliskII emulator includes an adequate copy of StuffIt Expander, but you must transfer your .sit or .hqx file to the emulator and unstuff it there.


TLG unlock

Q: Where do I unlock the TLG -- I cannot find it in the installer?

A: This feature will request the code for the TLG the first time that you use it (to import a Thesaurus Linguae Graecae file as a User Tool). Select Import User Tool from the File>User Files submenu, and choose TLG as the type of file in the dialog box. Enter the code when requested and proceed with the import.

Note: The TLG import only works with the files from the TLG CD-ROM, not the website.


PhotoGuide pictures

Q: I installed the PhotoGuide but cannot find any pictures.

A: The PhotoGuide is an English tool so you'll find it in the same menu as your other dictionaries, Place Names and Sites. The photos are in the main page, but not every place has photos. You can go to Set Tool Display (Display menu) and set the thumbnails to Medium or Large, then you can easily see them in the articles, and click on them to get the full picture. Be sure to save this as the default for this tool.

The neat way to access the tool is to make it the default tool opened when double-clicking on a name in the Atlas. You can do this in Set Map Display (Display menu), and then make it the default for new map windows.


English glosses missing

Q: How do I get Accordance to display the English definition of the word in a tagged Greek or Hebrew text in the parsing window? I have tried the "parsing preferences" and everywhere "English" is listed next to a "checkbox" it is grey and will not let me select that.

A: The Greek words and Hebrew words files which contain the glosses should have been installed in the Accordance folder, from where they will automatically be added to Accordance when you run the program. Please re-run the installer.


Installing fonts

Q: The Greek and Hebrew do not appear on the screen?

A: The fonts are usually installed automatically. Rerun the latest installer to install the fonts in this system.


Fonts messed up

Q: How do I get the Greek, Hebrew or other Accordance fonts to display correctly?

A: Please read the Accordance Fonts.pdf and/or download the Font Fixer utility. In OS X we are seeing erratic behavior of FontBook with our fonts. The PDF explains the situation and offers solutions to various font issues. The Font Fixer utility removes all old copies of all our Accordance fonts, and reinstalls only the latest TrueType fonts in OS X.
