Well-respected Old Testament scholar Joseph Blenkinsopp is the John A. O’Brien Professor Emeritus of Biblical Studies chair at Notre Dame. He has written a number of books on various Old Testament subjects. Blenkinsopp’s book on the Pentateuch is part of the Anchor Bible Reference Library.
Blenkinsopp’s The Pentateuch serves a number of purposes. It serves as an introduction/survey that is written on a level so that the non-academic can follow the discussion, while at the same time keeping the scholar engaged as well. Though Blenkinsopp was not attempting to write a commentary on the Pentateuch, in some places he does just that (perhaps very strongly in some areas of literary and historical insights), but with special reference to the documentary hypothesis. This emphasis on the documentary hypothesis is certainly an important point for Blenkinsopp.
