Biblical Illustrator_120 New Release!
The Biblical Illustrator (OT & NT Complete)

It's Here! Don't Miss This One!

What if Charles Spurgeon helped you prepare next Sunday's sermon?

Or what if you could talk over your preaching with Joseph Parker, Richard Baxter, Henry Ward Beecher, and H. P. Liddon. Do you think it would make a difference to get the input of some of the greatest preachers who ever lived?

That's precisely what Joseph Exell had in mind when he put together the massive series of volumes called The Biblical Illustrator. The Biblical Illustrator was originally published in 1887 in London by Joseph Exell (one of the editors for the Pulpit Commentary).

In what can only be called a Herculean feat, he spent years gathering preaching notes and sermon outlines from the very best preachers of his day (in the late 1800s and early 1900s), and he did it covering every book of the Bible. The Biblical Illustrator is a collection of "anecdotes, similies, emblems, illustrations, expository, scientific, geographical, historical, and homiletics gathered from a wide range of home and foreign literature on the verses of the Bible."

Over 34,000 pages in its original 56-volume printing, The Biblical Illustrator is a massive compilation of treatments on 10,000 passages of Scripture.

And it is amazingly comprehensive. Exell approached his task by taking every verse in the Bible and seeking to discover how it has been preached in the past. Though there is plenty of exegetical material here, this is not primarily a commentary.

This series is for preachers, teachers, Bible students and anyone else looking for penetrating pastoral insights from some of the all-time greats of the faith.

Contributors include: Charles Spurgeon, Augustine, Alexander MacLaren, Thomas Manton, Matthew Henry, John Trapp, F. B. Meyer, J. C. Ryle, Charles Hodge, John Wesley, Adam Clark, Dwight L. Moody and hundreds of others.

Schocken Bible: The Five Books of Moses

A groundbreaking translation by Everett Fox with Introductions, Commentary, and Notes, published in 1995. "This translation is guided by the principle that the Hebrew Bible, like much of the literature of antiquity, was meant to be read aloud, and that consequently it must be translated with careful attention to rhythm and sound. The translation therefore tries to echo the Hebrew, and to lead the reader back to the sound structure and form of the original."

Many Voices_120

The Bible's Many Voices (Carasik)

Using historic, linguistic, anthropological, and theological sources, Carasik helps us distinguish between the Jewish Bible’s voices—the mythic, the historical, the prophetic, the theological, and the legal. By articulating the differences among these voices, he shows us not just their messages and meanings but also what mattered to the authors. In these contrasts we encounter the Bible anew as a living work whose many voices tell us about the world out of which the Bible grew—and the world that it created.
