A Closer Look at Eichrodt's Theology of the Old Testament (OTL)

October 18, 2017 - Richard Mansfield — Walther Eichrodt (1890-1978) taught at University of Basel (Switzerland) from 1921-1966 where Karl Barth also taught. Previously, he had received his education at Griefswald, Heidelberg and Erlangen where, like Gerhard von Rad, he studied under Otto Procksch. He was a close colleague to Adolf Schlatter with whom he often led Bible conferences. In 1933, Eichrodt broke with many of his recent teachers and peers by publishing Theology of the Old Testament (now in its 5th edition, 1960), affirming that the Hebrew Scriptures were not a substandard ...

NEW! Revisiting the Corruption of the New Testament (Wallace)

October 09, 2017 - Richard Mansfield — Two decades later, Bart D. Ehrman’s book, The Orthodox Corruption of Scripture: The Effect of Early Christological Controversies on the Text of the New Testament continues to create debate and dialogue. Ehrman’s later works have even brought textual criticism, a field once reserved to academia, to the lay level. In response to Ehrman’s work, Daniel B. Wallace has edited Revisiting the Corruption of the New Testament: Manuscript, Patristic, and Apocryphal Evidence--released today for the Accordance Bible Software Library. Revisiting the ...

October 02, 2017 - Accordance Bible Software — Beginning in 1965, the Golden Nuggets digest has been delivering sermon outlines to busy pastors for over half a century. These outlines began primarily as the work of “Brother” Maze Jackson, described on The Preacher’s Goldmine website as “a popular southern evangelist who preached with the fire and zeal of the old revival preachers of the past.” Maze Jackson was well known as an evangelist, pastor, and radio preacher. Now available in one Accordance module, you can add all 59 available volumes, incredibly totaling 13,482 sermon outlines, to ...

NEW! Stevens Greek WORKBOOK

September 25, 2017 - Richard Mansfield — I discovered Gerald L. Stevens’ New Testament Greek grammar in the mid-nineties before I had heard of Accordance Bible Software. I found Stevens’ Greek grammar to be a breath of fresh air compared to a lot of the more intimidating grammars that were written by earlier generations. Those earlier grammars tended to be mostly text. They gave you the rules, inflection paradigms and vocabulary—all of which were to be memorized. The personal computer changed education across every discipline, including biblical studies. Stevens’ grammar, much like ...

Seven Strategies for Students Who Use Accordance (The Complete Boxed Set)

September 14, 2017 - Richard Mansfield — Over the past couple of summers, I've posted installments in a series of strategies students can use to fully engage their studies using Accordance Bible Software. The idea for this series originated with an Accordance presentation I gave at a seminary in which I was given an hour and a half to show students how Accordance could help them in their studies. Knowing that there was no way I could cover everything Accordance does in that short amount of time, I came up with the "Seven Strategies for Students" list as my outline. Now that the p ...

Irma Updates

September 08, 2017 - Helen Brown — As many of you know, the "headquarters" and office of Accordance are located in central Florida, just a little north of Orlando. Therefore, like millions of other Floridians, we are watching the skies and the news, and preparing for the arrival of hurricane Irma on Sunday and Monday. We are located well inland and do not expect catastrophic damage or flooding, just the inconveniences of probably losing power and communications for a few days. Our servers are all safely located out of state so you should experience no interruption of access to ...

Save Specialized Workspaces (Strategies for Students #7)

September 07, 2017 - Richard Mansfield — This last tip (for now) in our Strategies for Students series is a very basic one that I hope you’re already employing in your academic use of Accordance. If not, read on because your use of Accordance may be about to become much more efficient! A while back, a user asked me for help in something he was trying to do in Accordance. He opened up his own laptop, launched Accordance, and began with, “This is something I do nearly every day.” Just to get to his question, he first had to build this very elaborate Workspace with multiple texts and ...

September 05, 2017 - Richard Mansfield — If you were only going to purchase one title on Acts… Well, Craig S. Keener may indeed have written “the last and final word” on the Book of Acts for this generation. In print, Acts: An Exegetical Commentary by Keener comes in four volumes for a total of an incredible 4640 pages. Do-It-Yourself Textual Criticism (Strategies for Students #6)

September 04, 2017 - Richard Mansfield — In the 1990s I took a New Testament textual criticism class under John B. Polhill as an elective in my MDiv studies. Looking back, it remains in my recollection as one of the best classes I experienced during that time. I learned more about the origin and transmission of the New Testament in that course than in any other class I took. I found everything about the subject fascinating and still do. At that time, although Accordance was newly available, this was still the early days for Bible software. There were biblical texts—both original ...

Use the Infer Command for Original/Independent Research (Strategies for Students #5)

August 28, 2017 - Richard Mansfield — Want to impress your professors? Show them that you know how to do original/independent research using the INFER command in Accordance. Discover intertextuality not only between the books of the Bible, but also between the Bible and related literature of the time period. One of the more challenging tasks a student in biblical studies will face is that of pursuing original research. Easily, we can ask, after 2,000 years of Christian study of the Bible--and even more than that for Jewish study--can anything original truly be found? At one time ...

NEW! Biblical Studies Titles from Eerdmans

August 28, 2017 - Richard Mansfield — Today, we are releasing four new biblical studies titles from Eerdmans Publishing. These books cover diverse subjects such as culture, literature, interpretation, and missional mandate. In many circles, the late Dr. John J. Pilch’s name was synonymous with understanding the culture of the Ancient Near East. Published in 2012, Cultural Handbook to the Bible is the culmination of a lifetime of research and a permanent legacy of teaching content from a favorite instructor. In an age when multiple books tell us to look at the biblical world ...

Use Accordance for Biblical Language Classes (7 Strategies for Students #4)

August 21, 2017 - Richard Mansfield — Using a tool as powerful as Accordance Bible Software while learning a biblical language can be like walking a fine line: you want to harness the power and time-saving benefits of using Accordance, but you don’t want to shortcut the learning process, or worse become dependent on Accordance instead of actually learning the language. Let’s face it, studying any language requires a lot of memorization. And my own experience echoes what I’ve always heard—memory is like a muscle; the more you use it, the better it becomes. I remember that in both ...
