The PhotoMuseum: An Odyssey of Learning

December 27, 2013 - David Lang — On Monday, I announced the release of the Bible Times PhotoMuseum, a richly illustrated guide to the people of the Bible along with the activities they engaged in and the objects they used. Today I want to tell you about how this unique new resource was conceived and developed. Dr. J was apparently the first to suggest that we develop a resource similar to the Bible Lands PhotoGuide that would focus on Biblical people, activities, and objects rather than places. It was a great idea. We already had a huge collection of photos that we ...

What in the World is a PhotoMuseum?

December 23, 2013 - David Lang — I'm very pleased to announce the release of a unique new Accordance resource: The Accordance Bible Times PhotoMuseum. What in the world is a “PhotoMuseum”? I'm so glad you asked. Many of you are familiar with our Bible Lands PhotoGuide, which is essentially a richly illustrated guide to Biblical places like Gibeon, Hazor, and Jerusalem. Set the PhotoGuide as the tool to link to when you double-click a place name in the Accordance Bible Atlas, and the Atlas becomes infinitely more useful. (You can do that in the Map Tab Display settings ...

Thankful for my Remarkable Accordance Family

December 03, 2013 - David Lang — Last week, we brought our largest team ever to the annual meetings of the Evangelical Theological Society (ETS) and the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL). While Accordance is based in Orlando, Florida, many key members of the Accordance team—including trainers, developers, marketing personnel, and associate scholars—are scattered across the United States and even throughout the world. These folks all telecommute really effectively, but we decided to use ETS/SBL as a pretext for getting many of them together in one place. For that reason, w ...

A Seminar for Every Accent!

October 17, 2013 - David Lang — As a native of Central Florida, I grew up around a wide variety of accents. Of course, I knew plenty of people who spoke with a Southern accent, such as my great-great-uncle, Havis, who is the only man I ever let address me as "Sugar Boy"! (Somehow it didn't sound weird when he said it.) I also knew plenty of northern transplants who said things like "you guys" instead of "y'all" and who spoke of "soda" or "pop" instead of "Coke" (down here any soft drink is a "Coke"). Less often, I would run into people with a Texas accent or even a Bahamian ...

Using Accordance on a Surface Pro

October 16, 2013 - Darin Allen — Accordance is now available natively on Windows, and to celebrate we are giving away a new Surface Pro 2. One of the reasons we decided to give away a Surface Pro 2 was because it allows people to experience the full desktop version of Accordance on a tablet. The included digital pen is especially helpful for working with Accordance. For example, the pen makes it easy to select words and see Instant Details. It is also helpful for interacting with small interface elements like icons and disclosure triangles. Rick Mansfield recently put ...

Growing Accordance for Mac and Windows Together

October 03, 2013 - Darin Allen — This has been a big week for Accordance, as we finally released Accordance for Windows on Monday. Early comments and reviews have been very positive, and we are overwhelmingly appreciative to everyone who has helped share the news via Facebook, Twitter, and email. We have also received a few comments from users who are concerned that our commitment to developing Accordance for Windows will cause development on Accordance for Mac to suffer. I wanted to take a moment to address these concerns and offer some clarification on our growth strategy. ...

New in 10.3: Highlight Symbols

October 02, 2013 - David Lang — In addition to the release of our native Windows version, we quietly released Accordance 10.3 for Mac as well. This free update for existing users features a number of significant new features. Among these, are the addition of highlight symbols. Accordance has long let you apply highlight styles to any text you select. This is akin to using a pen to highlight, underline, or circle words in a print book. But if you've ever annotated a print book, chances are you've also drawn little symbols in the text or margins. Perhaps it was a star, ...

Sale on NICOT and NICNT

September 24, 2013 - Darin Allen — I’m a huge fan of Bible commentaries, which is why this week’s sale on the New International Commentary on the Old Testament and New International Commentary on the New Testament is so exciting. While I use various commentaries for different purposes, NICOT and NICNT are probably the commentary sets that I use most often in Accordance. There are many reasons why this has become my go-to commentary series, so I thought I’d share some of them. 1) Thorough Interpretive Discussion Many passages in the Bible have a variety interpretive ...

Studying Philippians 1 with the GNT Key

September 17, 2013 - Darin Allen — If you are interested in studying the Greek New Testament, but don’t quite consider yourself a Greek scholar, you may want to pick up The New Linguistic and Exegetical Key to the Greek New Testament (AKA “GNT Key” in Accordance) that was just released. This useful companion to the Greek New Testament is designed for students and pastors whose knowledge of Greek grammar is limited but who want to study the Greek New Testament. This resource is notable for the way it gathers, and filters through, the sea of information available in modern ...

Accordance 10 Roundup: Original Languages Collection

August 21, 2013 - Darin Allen — Original Languages Collection Overview The Original Languages Collection is designed for scholars, students, and those who want to study the Bible in Greek and Hebrew. It is important to note that this Collection is almost entirely focused on original language tools, so it isn’t for everyone. Accordance 10 Roundup: Bible Study Collection

August 20, 2013 - Darin Allen — Bible Study Collection Overview The Bible Study Collection Includes everything in the Starter Collection, plus a whole lot more. The emphasis here is on English Bible study resources, i.e. not Greek and Hebrew tools. Specifically, the Bible Study Collection includes an assortment of Bible translations, commentaries, dictionaries, preaching helps, historical works, theological writings, and devotionals. It does not include many original language tools, so Greek and Hebrew buffs will want to consider one of our higher-level ...

August 19, 2013 - Darin Allen — If you are thinking about purchasing a new Accordance 10 Collection, you might be wondering which Collection is right for you. It’s an understandable question, as each Accordance Collection includes dozens, if not hundreds, of modules. To help you in your decision process, I thought it might be helpful to write a series of blog posts that focus on each of our six Collections, highlighting some of the modules I’ve personally found useful in my own Bible study, and those I know others have found useful. Starter Collection Overview ...

It Was the Serpent!

August 12, 2013 - David Lang — In preparing for a Sunday School class, I was reading the account in Genesis 3 of God's interrogation and sentencing of Adam, Eve, and the serpent. I've read this passage many times before and am pretty familiar with it, but the English translation I was reading helped me notice something new. After Adam lays the blame for his sin on Eve ("the woman") and even on God ("You gave to be with me"), Eve likewise blames her sin on the serpent. However, most translations render Eve's confession as a simple statement of fact: "The serpent deceived me ...
