John R. Kohlenberger III (1951 - 2015)

October 02, 2015 - Accordance Bible Software — We were saddened to hear yesterday that John R. Kohlenberger III passed away on Tuesday, at the age of 64, following a decade-long battle with prostate cancer. Kohlenberger was known for his work connecting the words in English translations to underlying Hebrew and Greek languages, especially in the New International Version. Working with Edward Goodrick, John Kohlenberger improved and corrected previous biblical word numbering methods to develop what is referred to as the Goodrick-Kohlenberger Key Numbering System. The use of G/K numbers ...

How Do YOU Prepare a Sermon?

September 30, 2015 - David Lang — For the past several years, I have been volunteering to teach high school English at the homeschool Co-op my children attend. Since my students are all from church-going families, I teach them to critique and write persuasive essays by focusing on a literary form they experience every week: the sermon. First, I have them read a number of classic and modern sermons. Then I have them take notes on their own pastor’s sermon and turn in a brief written summary. Next I have them develop a sermon outline, and finally, they write their own sermon ...

How to Run Accordance 11 in Safe Mode

September 28, 2015 - Richard Mansfield — If you use any software program long enough, eventually you’ll experience what I refer to as “a state of wonkiness” (technical term). While we’d like to think that Accordance is above the fray of such things, occasionally something can go wrong. In situations like this, what are you to do? If Accordance (or any other software program for that matter) is not working as it’s supposed to, usually the first line of defense is to close and restart the program. If that doesn’t work, restarting the computer itself may solve your problem if there was ...

NEW! Outside the Bible

September 07, 2015 - Richard Mansfield — The Bible was not written in a vacuum. This basic principle for interpreting the Scriptures often seems to be forgotten, inevitably leading to misinterpretation and error. Nevertheless, a responsible interpreter knows that the Bible was not just “dropped from the heavens,” but rather came through a process interacting with culture and context over a long period of time. For instance, I’ve often said that a reader cannot fully appreciate the context of the New Testament without familiarity with the Intertestamental Literature that precedes it. ...

My First Introduction to the Word Biblical Commentary

September 03, 2015 - Richard Mansfield — ...and why you should consider the series, too. I was introduced to the Word Biblical Commentary during my first semester in seminary in Fall 1991. I had somehow managed to place into Advanced Old Testament Survey, allowing me to complete in one semester what usually took two. My professor was Dr. John D. W. Watts, the original Old Testament editor for the Word Biblical Commentary. I later learned from his teaching assistant that Dr. Watts had recently completed his two-volume commentary on Isaiah for the series. This pleased the TA because ...

NEW! Paideia Commentaries & Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture

August 17, 2015 - Richard Mansfield — Years ago—in the dark ages before the advent of Bible software—a friend and I were talking about the impressive personal library of a mutual acquaintance. “I’ve heard that John [not his real name] has over 100 volumes about the Book of Revelation alone!” I said. “Yes, I’ve been to his house, and I’ve seen all those books, but I was not impressed,” my friend replied. “Really—why not?” I asked. “Well, it’s true that John has over 100 books on Revelation, but it doesn’t matter because they all say the same thing!” And that’s the danger, isn’t i ...
