Use Accordance for Biblical Language Classes (7 Strategies for Students #4)

Using a tool as powerful as Accordance Bible Software while learning a biblical language can be like walking a fine line: you want to harness the power and time-saving benefits of using Accordance, but you don’t want to shortcut the learning process, or worse become dependent on Accordance instead of actually learning the language. Let’s face it, studying any language requires a lot of memorization. And my own experience echoes what I’ve always heard—memory is like a muscle; the more you use it, the better it becomes.

I remember that in both my introductory Greek and Hebrew classes, I spent a lot of time looking up words in lexicons. Having instantaneous access to all the major lexicons is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how Accordance can help you in your biblical language classes. We’ve already covered getting Accordance versions of textbooks (be certain to check whether or not your Hebrew or Greek grammar is available for Accordance!). Here are just a few of the ways Accordance can help you while you study Greek and Hebrew.


Translation Notes

Translation Notes

Translation is the main task of any language class. In the multiple biblical language classes I took years ago, I wrote my translations out by hand and carried sheets of paper to class. There’s nothing wrong with that, but I have very little of that work today. I probably translated the majority of the New Testament and much of the Old Testament when I was in school. I wish I had my translation and notes saved digitally, but it wasn’t an easy option back then.

Regardless of whether you want to work out a translation by hand or directly on the computer, consider saying your translation work (the translation itself and your syntax notes) in an Accordance User Notes file. This set of notes can be viewed in parallel with the original language text as well as popular Bible versions.

Need to turn your translation in as homework? Select the text you need to turn in and from the contextual menu choose Print Selected Text. Or if you need to format it or submit it electronically, copy and paste it into the word processor of your choice.

Don’t be surprised if you’re referring to these notes for years to come! And it’s also good practice to continue saving this kind of work when you’re teaching or preaching after you graduate.


Parsing

Parsing

Using Accordance is like having Greek or Hebrew super powers: with just a mouseover, you can get instant morphological and syntax information. However, I regularly tell users, “Use your Accordance super powers for good, not evil.” So, you don’t want to use Accordance to do your parsing homework for you. However, you can use Accordance to check your parsing homework.

In some cases parsing a Greek or Hebrew word can be interpretive. If your personal parsing work doesn’t line up with what you find in Accordance, don’t just correct your work according to what you’ve found in the software. Instead, try to figure out why Accordance is giving you different information than what you found on your own.

In addition to moving your mouse over the tagged original language text, you can also create a Parsing Chart. Begin by highlighting the text (this can be individual words, verses, or entire passages), and from the contextual menu, select Lookup: Parsing. If you want to save your chart, make certain it is the active tab, and from the File menu, choose Save Active Tab.


Diagrams

Diagramming sentences has really made a strong comeback in recent years after being neglected for an entire generation of students. There’s no real substitute for diagramming a sentence to understand not only syntax, but also the thought process and logic of the biblical writer.

Accordance has a built-in diagramming feature that’s extremely flexible. You can create your own diagrams and save them for later use in Accordance. Save your diagrams in Accordance and re-edit them later if necessary. Print them out to turn in for homework or take a screenshot to paste them in a word processor. If you want to incorporate a diagram with your Translation Notes (see above), take a screenshot of your diagram and add it to your notes.

You can create as many diagrams as you want in Accordance; however, we also have a Greek Diagrams module available for sale in the Accordance Store. If you purchase these diagrams while taking a class, though, remember proper use of your super powers! You will want to use the purchased Accordance Diagrams to compare and check the diagrams you have already created.


Word Charts (Syntax Practice)

Word Chart

Many Accordance users may not even know they have access to Word Charts from within the software. Select a passage in an original language biblical text, and from the Amplify Menu, choose Language: Word Chart.

This will give you a table with columns for the biblical word (inflected form), lexemes (lexical form), parsing, function, translation, and comments. By default, the function and comments sections are blank. These tables are completely editable, so double-clicking a blank cell will allow you to add your work to it.

If you really want to challenge yourself, double-click any of the cells that already have content and delete what’s there. Test yourself by figuring out on your own information such as lexical form, parsing, and translation. These charts can also be saved for later reference. With the Word Chart as the active tab, select the File menu: Save Active Tab.

And here’s a tip for the profs: follow the same procedure in the paragraph above to create a quiz that can be printed out for your students to fill in the missing information.


Vocab Lists

Beginning Hebrew and Greek students live or die by memorizing vocabulary. Here’s how to create a vocabulary list in Accordance. Since almost every intro Hebrew class translates the Book of Ruth, we’ll use it as an example in the steps below.

  1. With a Hebrew text set to search for words, type this into the search field: [RANGE Ruth] <AND> *

    Note that because Hebrew is a right to left language, your search argument will appear reversed from what you see above, but that’s okay. In fact, you can enter the elements of this search in any order as long as <AND> is in the middle. The asterisk is the wild card symbol used to find every word in Ruth.

  2. After you run your search, you should see every word in Ruth appear in red because every word is a hit resulting from the wild card (*). Click View Analytics immediately above the text and choose Word Count Totals: Analysis.

  3. Click on the Display Settings (gear icon) for your Analysis tab and make certain the first column shows the LEX. Set Sort to Count Down, Secondary Sort to Alphabetical, the Count to None (to remove the numbers), and check Show Root with LEX and Show Gloss with LEX.  Click OK.

  4. Print the list or Copy it from the Analysis window to a word processor or whatever app you intend to use with your vocabulary.

Accordance and the Birth of a New Translation

Today, in lieu of our regular Throwback Thursday post, we're pleased to present this guest post by James F. Davis, PhD. Part of the translation and editorial team of the Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB), James reflects on how their use of Accordance helped them develop a completely new translation (as opposed to a revision of an earlier translation).



Accordance and the Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)


In their book, HCSB: Navigating the Horizons in Bible Translation, editors E. Ray Clendenen and David K. Stabnow describe the origins, development and philosophy of the HCSB. In the introduction they state, “In all the committees, the Bible study program, Accordance®, took center stage beside the translation itself.” As a part of the original HCSB translation and editorial team in the late 90s and early 2000s, I thought I would flesh out in more detail how the tool of Accordance revolutionized what we did as Bible translators and editors, going way beyond what translations of earlier times had available.

Before I do this, for the record I would just like to mention how the connection of Accordance and the HCSB came to be. The first official General Editor of what we now know as the HCSB was Dr. Arthur Farstad. Dr. Farstad had been a close friend of the originator of Accordance, Dr. Roy Brown, and when the translation was being considered the use of some computer aids was a given. So the team started to purchase Apple Macintosh computers simply because Accordance at that time only ran on the Macintosh platform. Sadly, four months into the project, Dr. Farstad passed away.

hcsb Lifeway Publishers then appointed Dr. Edwin Blum as the new General Editor. Under Dr. Blum's direction, our team of editors, translators, and English stylists moved forward on the translation, equipped with Macintosh computers and fully loaded Accordance programs with all the latest tools and texts needed for original language work in the Hebrew and Aramaic Old Testament and Greek New Testament. We used Accordance every work day and always had the program open before we did any serious translation work. In my case, I had the privilege of doing this for over five years helping to develop the translation to get it to the point of publication. I would summarize how Accordance aided the HSCB in three areas: speed, accuracy, and unique analysis.

Speed: Time is money, especially when you have teams of committees trying to develop a brand new translation. Using Accordance dramatically increased the speed of simple tasks such as looking up a word in a lexicon or finding a particular verse reference. Someone proficient in performing these tasks manually might be able to accomplish them in a minute or so—that is, if he or she is successful on the first try (good luck with that Hebrew root on a manual search!). With Accordance, these tasks take only a few seconds. Words were looked up thousands and tens of thousands of times—almost always in multiple lexicons—so Accordance dramatically increased our speed in making good decisions. The time for other research such as concordance searches on Greek and Hebrews words was so fast that we routinely did them as we went along. Performing such searches manually would have slowed the whole team down waiting for some result.

Accuracy: We always had up to date lexicons in our Accordance arsenal including Louw and Nida’s Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament based on Semantic Domains (1988) and initially the second edition but then the third edition in 2000 of Danker’s updated A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature (BDAG). For the Old Testament, we had Koehler and Baumgartner’s The Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament, only recently translated into English (2000). All these lexicons were fully searchable for words or verses on any word meaning issue that we were looking at. For more complete word studies lexical information was coupled with concordance search analysis. For comparison purposes we also had access to all the major English translations, new and old (as well as major foreign languages), that could easily be laid out in Accordance in parallel columns next to original language texts. In the Synoptic Gospels we used gospel harmonies in Accordance to help ensure that similar Greek phrases were rendered the same while differences were also noted and treated as such. Bible dictionaries such as the Anchor Bible Dictionary and Hebrew and Greek Grammars were also used as research and evaluative tools.

Unique Analysis: Computer Bible programs in general have been a tremendous asset to all translations done in the past decade or so, but Accordance was used in one more critical way that probably gave us a significant edge in developing a new translation. As the translation was getting underway, Dr. Brown trained me to develop Accordance modules for draft books and editions of the HSCB. Later, I trained another team member to help do this. So as each book of the Bible was sent in or revised I could convert the work into a usable draft edition module of the HCSB that our team could install in its Accordance programs. In this way, we could check and revise our own work for accuracy and consistency in the developmental stage of the translation. This proved to be a very powerful tool in making the HCSB the translation that it is today.

Lastly, I would say that Accordance made the HCSB translation process much more enjoyable than it would have been if we would not have had it. That’s because for Bible scholars and students who like Bible study, Accordance is fast and fun.

Answering a Question with a Question

Yesterday in my Sunday School class, I was teaching through Romans 8:31-39. In that passage, Paul reflects on whether anything can separate those who "love God and are called according to his purpose" (v. 28) from the "love of God that is in Christ Jesus" (v. 39). He does this by asking a series of questions such as "Who can bring an accusation against God’s elect?" (v. 33), "Who is the one who condemns?" (v. 34), and "Who can separate us from the love of Christ?" (v. 35). He answers each of these questions by eliminating every potential accuser, but it has always bothered me that in most English translations of this passage, Paul's answers don't quite seem to fit the questions.

In this video, I use highlight symbols to illustrate the pattern of questions and answers in this passage, and then I look at the underlying Greek to understand what is going on. I then argue that two answers in the text would be better rendered as questions. I hope you find it helpful.

New Testament Translators’ Handbooks Now Available

UBS Hand-Heb-cover I'm pleased to announce the release of an Accordance edition of the United Bible Society’s New Testament Handbook Series, a twenty-volume set of commentaries designed to provide practicing translators with “valuable exegetical, historical, cultural, and linguistic information” to help them render the New Testament text in other languages. This will obviously be a welcome resource to the many professional translators who rely on Accordance, but the UBS Handbook Series is also a fantastic resource for the rest of us.

The UBS Handbooks differ from other commentaries in that they don't just stop at analyzing the meaning of a passage. Instead, they go one step further to suggest the best way to convey that meaning in a target language. That's not just the kind of help professional translators need; it's the kind of thing every preacher and teacher of the Bible must do. For each phrase or expression in the text, the UBS Handbooks will suggest specific wordings, caution against renderings which might lead to misunderstandings, show how a literal rendering might actually be misleading, etc. Since preachers and teachers are looking for clear ways to explain the meaning of the text to contemporary Bible readers, these discussions are immediately applicable to the teaching task.

Another advantage the UBS Handbooks have over other commentaries is that they cannot just focus on the major aspects of a passage while glossing over the minor points. SInce a translator must know how to render every single phrase of a passage, even minor expressions receive serious attention. If you're preaching on some minor aspect of a passage, you may find that these handbooks offer more help than more traditional commentaries.

One of the most surprising things about these commentaries is that they are much more accessible than you might expect. After all, their primary audience is professional translators who must have an in depth knowledge of the original Greek. These commentaries could easily have been written for that level of technical expertise, but happily, they're written at a level anyone can understand. Commentary begins not with the Greek text, but with a typical English translation of the text. The structure of the underlying Greek is usually dealt with indirectly, and when it is discussed explicitly, the Greek text is transliterated.
