Picture the New Testament (Lighting the Lamp Video Podcast #175)

Ever try to imagine what biblical times were like? Where Jesus walked around Galilee? Or how Paul traveled during his missionary journeys?  Accordance is pleased to introduce its newest visual resource, Picture the New Testament. The initial release covers the four Gospels, Acts, and 1-2 Peter. When it is complete, it will span the entire New Testament and include more than a thousand images. Organized canonically, this resource scrolls with our Bibles, offering photos, maps, and other visual illustrations to illuminate every passage. Articles include photos that illustrate the people, places, or objects mentioned in the passage; basic information about the topic; and hyperlinks to Accordance’s other visual resources (for more information and more photos!). This resource is perfect for the Bible study leader, pastor, or person for whom seeing something is every bit as important as reading about it.

Philip & the Ethiopian (Lighting the Lamp Video Podcast #163)

Join Dr. J in this study of the Ethiopian’s conversion (Acts 8:26-40). This podcast digs deeper into the passage, determining its limit, establishing its literary and geographical context, and investigating  unclear and unknown items in the passage. The study is a good model of how to use the Info Pane efficiently.

New Accordance, New Demo, New Podcast

Today has seen a flurry of new releases and announcements. In case you've missed them, here's a brief recap:

New Accordance: We're very excited to announce the release of Accordance 9.3, a free update for all users of Accordance 9. This is a major update which addresses a number of much-requested features, and I'll be covering it in detail in future posts. Until then, download it, play with it, and have fun.

Assistant Window

New Demo: Of course, you shouldn't keep all that fun to yourself, so encourage your friends to try Accordance 9.3 for themselves. We've just released a new, beefed up trial version that is far more functional than previous demos, and the new Assistant window will help those who are brand new to Accordance get up and running right away.

New Podcast: If we're not careful, we're going to lose Dr. J to some top-flight producer of infomercials. His latest podcast on Why Bible Software does a masterful job of explaining why you should want to use Bible software in general and Accordance in particular. Be sure to check it out.

But Wait, There's More! Okay, so that's just the stuff that's new today. In the coming days, you can expect a new update to Accordance for iOS, a flurry of cool new module releases, and more.

A "Color" Commentary on the Bible

Arch_sb When you watch a sporting event on television, the broadcast crew typically includes two commentators. The play-by-play commentator tells you what is happening as a play unfolds, while the "color analyst" follows up with a more detailed explanation of why the play worked or didn't work, what the coach or player might have been thinking at the moment, and so forth. The color analyst's job is to give you an insider's perspective, drawing you into the human drama behind the athletic event.

Like a play-by-play commentator, most study Bibles give you information about what is happening in a particular passage, but they aren't always able to give you a sense of the "local color." The Archaeological Study Bible is different. Like a "color analyst," it focuses on the historical and cultural background of a passage, explaining how some of the things which may seem foreign to us made perfect sense in their original context. It's a study Bible that offers you an "insider's perspective," drawing you into the human drama behind the Biblical text.

Want to find out more about the Archaeological Study Bible? Dr. J, who has the voice and manner to be a great color commentator himself, has just released a new podcast in which he discusses the Archaeological Study Bible's distinctives and demonstrates how to use it in Accordance.

The Archaeological Study Bible is currently on sale through January 20th.
