What is your favorite Bible Dictionary?

List, followed by explanations of my reasoning; I've had all these for a while already (some I bought immediately when they were sold the very first time under Accordance): Webster's Dictionary (1913) Dictionary of English Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases (under Accordance, and is in public domain) Eerdmans Dictionary of the Bible (2000) Oxford Dictionary of the Bible: Second Edition (ODB) (2009) ISBE (1915) Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels, Second Edition (IVP-Jesus & Gospels 2) (2013) Dictionary of the Old Testament: Historical Books (IVP-Historical) (2005) The Accordance Dictionary of Place Names (2000) Gute Nachricht Bibel: Sach- und Worterklärung (GNB Wörterbuch) (2000) NAS Topical Index (2000) The Brill Dictionary of Religion (BDR) (2006) English Key to Latin Words, Abbrevations and Symbols of BHS (BHS Latin Key) (1985) Pocket Dictionary of Liturgy & Worship (2009) Pocket Dictionary of Reformed Tradition (2013) Encyclopedia of Hebrew Language and Linguistics (EHLL) (2013) I use BDR the most. Other than it, idk which few ones I use the most, I use all of the above every time I need to or want to. I don't have any other major/big Bible Encyclopedias etcetera series, under Accordance; I don't have AYBD (I have it under two other platforms), ISBE Revised, NIDB (I have it under Verbum and as printed hardcover books); and I'm not gonna buy any whether conventional type Bible Dictionaries or special purpose ENCYCLOPEDIAS/theme Dictionaries. It's really silly to make promotions and sales for plain conventional Bible Dictionaries of the ordinary type such as ISBE Revised. Either the users need them or not, it's unnecessary to create needs in users for those! It's as if someone would make a dictionary specialising in the vocabulary of daily newspaper articles, and would then create a software around it, and would then regularely shout out salespromotions for it. Every even below average individual and everyone else too, already realises and understands that it is meaningless to instead be googling terms that would be found in the all of these kinds of dictionaries and reference works. For the similar/SAME reason, I myself at least don't want AI-assisted sermon-writing or lookups. I DON'T CARE IF I DON'T GET EXHAUSTIVE INFORMATION or if a word is not found in the reference works I do have for offline use, I just simply the very next second move on to the next thing to keep me busy, I have enough ideas and concepts in my head a lot of the time anyway. If OakTree wants to, they can go ahead to develop AI as optional paid features - but You'd have to hire the person to do it all the while us users would fund the BEGINNING - us too who aren't ever gonna pay for nor use it; so don't keep it a secret if you venture on that new development! Too many big companies have made mistakes early on when they poured enormous amounts of money into development but were either too early or behind the competition and kept it a secret and only to later on finally cut the losses and quit or or wanted to themselves make dractic changes in technologies. It might be profitable and draw new customers to Accordance, I'm not an expert of the kind of AI, all I know about AI is Facebook user (would say I'm an expert in actual using and content producing) and perhaps the listening of music on smart device. I LOVE that about Accordance, that it doesn't come pre-packaged with huge encyclopedias and religious dictionaries, instead letting the user make their own picks from the storefront and at whatever times are best for the users - meaning when that the need HAS arisen - not beforehand. Thus I for example bought BDR at regular price - well worth it for me, useful, worth every penny and would be for others too, speaking of which I'm now WRITING A REVIEW of it, I didn't even consider waiting: https://www.accordancebible.com/product/brill-dictionary-of-religion-the-4-volumes/ Another good thing about Accordance, is that the software automatically groups all these kind of resources together in the library under a tab, and separates them from purely translational resources. Saves some work for ALL users (as mistyping resources could also happen if everyone is to label and group them themselves). Personally, I also very much like that Accordance doesn't for every user auto-populate humongous amounts of information from every reference work. The competition does and that's distracting at times, or makes my mind wander away unnecessarily, also the competition has these visually annoying progress bars constantly disturbing me - if I use that software altogether which I for the most part don't (I have only fired it up a handful of times per season 2023-2024) - I might go nuts if I would fire up the competition every time I realise I have a resource in it. I'm Okay with both having to duplicate things to some extent and to split types of needs and use over the two platforms so that I use one (the competition) for certain things and specific needs such as for very limited parts of Scripture (for example I can think of that I don't have adequate resources under Accordance for Genesis (I'm not sure I even have under the competition actually), Deuteronomy, Second Samuel, 1-2 Kings and Psalms, just to quickly think of the 39-book Old Testament, and Galatians and First Peter in the New Testament (I don't even bother with those books anyway)); and Accordance for everything else. For some parts of the Bible I don't have adequate resources anywhere whether printed or digital, such as Jonah, Malachi, Ephesians, but those are anyhow my least favourite to actually study at depth. (I do have for example bought WBC Ephesians by Andrew T. Lincoln (1990) as an individual volume under Accordance so if something would really drive me to look into some verse I guess that's where I would start, (I bought the WBC full set under WORDsearch back in the day - and it has been merged with the competition).)

Accordance User Survey: What is your "role" as an Accordance User?

Use it daily for personal study. Love the app. So easy to use, highlighting tools and user notes have made study much more effective. Take my pad everywhere. Easy to dive straight in and out. It has been a great blessing.

Sorry about that, @Ken Simpson. I must have missed the edit while I was typing. If I would have seen it, my OCD would have been assuaged, and I would have just kept driving by. Thanks for confirming that the @ operator supports concatenation. I didn't see that documented in the help system when I first looked, but, upon closer inspection, I found this gem: "Up to six expressions can be linked together with @." Sure enough, attempting a search with a compound expression containing more than five @ operators results in the error message "The '@' character cannot be used here, since there are too many '@' characters already used in this expression." That's good to know!

That's correct Steven, which is why I stipulate "immediately follows". However, your explanation is clearer. And as an addit, you can concatenate @ operators. X@y@Z etc

    Verb Occurrences

Just wanted to note something because it has tripped me up on more than one occasion: [verb] [count 1] is not equivalent to [verb] <AND> [count 1]. The former returns verses that contain any two-word sequence consisting of a verb followed immediately by a hapax (241 hits [two-word sequences] across 228 verses). The latter returns verses that contain at least one verb and at least one hapax anywhere in the verse (6,377 hits [words] across 1,390 verses). And just for my future reference , the @ operator joins the criteria from multiple word selectors into a single selector, and thus [verb] @ [count 1] returns verses that contain any word that is both a verb and a hapax (610 hits [words] across 568 verses). (See this page in the help system for the difference between @ and <AND>.) (All the above results assume one is searching GNT28-T for Words with a range of [All text] and a scope of Verse.)
  8. Ken Simpson

    Verb Occurrences

Yes, you are finding hapaxes AND verbs with the search [verb] [count 1] where the hapax immediately follows the verb to attach one criterion to another add the @ symbol as vida suggested.

Trying out Start11. So far, love it. I managed to get it themed to Windows 7's Start Menu, and searching for apps is super fast. There is also a way to backup/migrate the settings to a new PC.

Thanks Nathan. I had the same problem as well, but restating the phone did the trick. Now I'll want to see how Accordance iOS handles "all" my modules on my iPhone 15 Plus.

Is this what you're saying? I'm getting nouns with this search. [verb] [count 1] φρεναπατάω (φρήν, ἀπάτη) to deceive = 1 Φύγελος Phygellus = 1 φυλακίζω (φυλάσσω) to imprison = 1 χειραγωγός (χείρ, ἄγω) one who leads by the hand = 1 χόρτασμα (χόρτος) feed; food = 1 χρηστεύομαι (χράομαι) to be good, kind = 1 ψευδοδιδάσκαλος (ψεύδομαι, διδάσκω) false teacher = 1 ᾠόν (ᾠόν) (n) egg = 1

You're welcome. The difference between this and Vida's approach is the extra @[count ...] constraint in hers. Yes, you should get lexical forms with this approach. The only issue I've found with these searches is that sometimes I get extraneous crases in the results that don't actually turn up in the text. In my case, though, I list lexemes from a given book, sorted by the number of occurrences of each lexeme in the whole New Testament, not just the number of times they appear in that particular book. Maybe the bug in my list comes up only with the extra complication, but it's rare enough that I can just skip over them.

Thanks!! This appears to be how Vida did it earlier. Quick question. It appears to be so but I want to confirm, the analysis gives me the lexical form correct? Could you foresee any anomalies in this approach?

    Verb Occurrences

@josephbradford Another way to do this is to type [verb] into the search box (including the square brackets), click the pie chart on the right of the search box -> Analysis Click "Sort:" in the window that pops up -> Count down This gives all the verbs sorted by number of occurrences in the text.

    Accordance in the Cloud

We'd like them to stick their heads in the cloud, but their managers seem to want them to sync first. Is cloud vapour? Well yes, but .... Puns aside, though, they are owning the mistake. Nevertheless, there are major holes that they're trying to patch: - pre-v.14 instability in data corruption and Easy-Install panic attacks. - early-v.14 platform instability - syncing - cloud access A lot of the v.14 instability has been addressed, though the pre-v.14 instability still seems to be lurking around. The pre-v.14 kinds of instability can get magnified by concurrent access, which both syncing and cloud usage intrinsically encourage. On the other hand, there may be some major changes required for a proper fix. For example, if they change their data format, we would all need to reinstall everything from scratch. If you have a lot of custom data, this can feel daunting. As you suggest, if we take v.14.0.9 on its own merits, it's a decent ministry tool. That's what Accordance is doing these days - they're not pushing cloud etc in their marketing as far as I can tell. Nevertheless, I don't mind a peek behind the scenes when someone asks. I don't see that as vaporware publicity; it's treating us as more than just customers, which is a good thing.

    Accordance in the Cloud

MHanel, I could not agree more. Between Accordance Cloud and Syncing, the message is sinking!! Accordance 2022...really? Own the mistake and either reimburse all those who you did not deliver to or credit them!! Accordance what has happened?
  24. I make own PODCASTS (on FB and YT). I to a large degree draw inspiration and quotes from books I have, for them. I have just started reviewing books, see: Pillar New Testament Commentary (17 Volumes, 5 Revised) (October 2023) - Accordance (accordancebible.com) NICNT: The Gospel of John, by J. Ramsey Michaels (2010) - Accordance (accordancebible.com) And I sing in two churchchoirs. In one of them I don't understand the language of the sermons and won't learn it, but can sing in. I can consider going to some more Church just for the experience and sermons and Biblestudies, too, but I feel a bit ashamed IF I can't contribute. I don't necessarily want to voice religious aspects of live if I would say something in things like Biblestudies. And I am accountant of the student union's board. I have got all the books I wanted and needed, and now during 2024 am not buying more, just three more books - that's gonna be during second half of May. it is possible for me to research, read closely, find satisfying answers to whatever I may wonder. I read regularly. I don't take notes other than for the purpose of producing my podcasts, but I might want to do highlights - later on 2025. I make efficient use of time for example in the commuter traffic. I don't have a need to discuss religious things. I do read Scriptures privately, and in total I have read them a lot. I do show it openly when I am carrying Scriptures. ACCORDANCE HAS THE RIGHT WORKFLOW AND I LOVE THE EASE OF BUYING AND OFTEN BUY AT REGULAR PRICE.

    Accordance in the Cloud

It would be helpful if Accordance didn't argue or play semantics on this anymore. Just own the mistake. It is vaporware in the sense that it was advertised as a coming feature of Accordance 14 before it was released and there still isn't even a date of beta testing in mid year 2024. Help your customer base out by just saying, we really screwed this up and we're working on it. No it is not done yet, and we don't know when, but this is the project we're putting all our resources toward. You can't change the past, so don't try to gaslight folks by saying the marketing wasn't promising this over a year and a half ago. I'm a customer. You have my money. I'm the one waiting for the product that was promised.

    Accordance in the Cloud

It is certainly not abandonware nor vaporware. I have seen some internal builds of Accordance Cloud and watching the programming team progress on this. I don't have a specific ETA yet on when we'll release it to a customer beta (I'll post an update when we do), but our programming team is continuing to make progress on Accordance Cloud. I'm looking forward to it myself, as having access to my Accordance modules anywhere will be a huge plus.

Text cut off - Rev 11:15 NIV

I can confirm this on my M2 MacBook Air running Accordance 14.0.9, Sonoma 14.5 (so also present in 14.5). I've attached my screenshot and debug log for our programmers. I'll get this filed as a bug report. To Reproduce: Open a new Text pane to ESV with Strongs, add NIV 2011 Enhanced GKE and CSB with Strong's in Parallel Navigate to Rev 11.15 (I used Verse Search to get there) The issue appears I believe we resolved a similar issue on Mobile.
