I'm new to Accordance and have some questions.

  1. Is it possible to utilize the "instant details" tool to review the "concordance" results? I am reviewing the Apostolic Fathers and can create a concordance of a tag based search, but I cannot seem to utilize the instant details feature within the concordance list.
  2. In the concordance results what does the number in parentheses represent? For example:
  • ἁγνίζω to purify (1)
Eph. 8:1 ὑμῶν καὶ ἁγνίζομαι ὑμῶν Ἐφεσίων,
Tral. 13:3 ἁγνίζεται ὑμῶν τὸ ἐμὸν πνεῦμα, οὐ
Barn. 5:1 ἀφέσει τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν ἁγνισθῶμεν, ὅ ἐστιν
Barn. 8:1 λαόν, ἵνα ἁγνίζωνται ἀπὸ τῶν ἁμαρτιῶ

3. I'm assuming the number in the parentheses represents how many times the "tag" which was searched for appears in the overall body of text? If this is the case, is there a way to produce a concordance with just the results of the tag which was sought?

4. Is there a simple/tool way to ascertain a condensed, neatly formatted list (like the concordance one) of just the tags I searched for? I ask because I have a very large body of material to work through!

5. I have experimented with the Analysis tool, but it does not seem to be able to include or notate the references of the search.

In general I would like to produce an "Analysis" list that includes references or a "Concordance" list that includes only the tags I searched for. I know I can use "copy as" to produce a list of references, but it does not give me a detailed list of the tags I am searching for.

FYI - I'm using the latest PC build of Accordance.

Hi Zach94,

Welcome.

1) I don't think I've seen a way to view concordance results in ID.

2) I'm puzzled how your search returned a 1 in parens. I get a 4 searching Holmes for ἁγνίζω, which appears to be a hit count according to the doc. file:///Applications/Accordance.app/Contents/Resources/Accordance%20Help/Default.htm#topics/06_braa/concordance.htm?Highlight=concordance

3) By just the results do you mean just the verse refs ? If so yes there is a way. Go tp the little gear wheel on the concordance pane and select customize display. In there you can choose how many references to cite a quotation for. Set that to zero and you can get results like :

for example. BTW, the search I did was ("=ἀγάπη","=θεός") against AF-T.

4. Is the above what you want here or is it something else ?

5. I don't think I've ever seen refs in the Analysis panes I've played with.

I did the above on the Mac but it should be the same on the PC. Haven't time to check right now but can later if you hit a snag.

thx

Daniel,

Thanks for the feedback. I should have clarified I originally searched the Apostolic Fathers using this command " [VERB first plural] " which produced 475 hits. I am wanting to compile a list which includes:

  • The verb
  • How many times total the verb occurs in the first plural form
  • References where the verb occurs in the first plural form

Something like this :

ἀγανακτέω to be indignant (1)
1Clem 56:2; 2Clem 19:2

ἀγαπάω to love (9)
1Clem 3:1; 15:4; 18:6; 22:2; 29:1; 56:4; 59:2–3; 2Clem 4:3; 6:6; 9:6; 13:4; Eph 1:3; 9:2; 11:1; 15:3; 21:1; Mag 6:1–2; Tral 1:0; 3:3; 4:2; 13:2; Rom 1:0; Phila 5:1–2; 7:2; Smyr 1:0; 7:1; 9:2; Poly 2:3; 5:1; Phili 2:2; 4:2; 9:2; MPoly 17:3; Did 1:2–3; 2:7; 5:2; Barn 1:1, 4; 2:8; 3:6–4:1; 4:3, 6, 8–9; 6:10; 19:2, 5, 9; 20:2; Shep 1:1; 28:1; 34:8; 88:3; 89:5; Diog 4:4; 5:11; 6:6; 7:5; 10:2–4, 7; 12:1, 6

ἁγιάζω to sanctify (1)
1Clem 1:0; 46:2; 59:3; Eph 2:2; 12:2; Did 8:2; 10:5; Barn 15:1, 3, 6–7; Shep 17:1

ἁγνίζω to purify (1)
Eph 8:1; Tral 13:3; Barn 5:1; 8:1

The only concern I have here is that count in brackets doesn't make sense to me. I notice several things. The count varies with the type of search you do. So for example ἀγανακτέω above shows one when searched for by [verb first plural] but 2 when searched for as =ἀγανακτέω. The concordance references are the same. One is a first plural subj and the other is an infinitive. Not sure what I think about that last bit.

So my guess is this. The list of refs contains all the references to all forms. The count counts the number that match the criterion. I'd have to do more checking of other examples but that would explain the first example above. Try =ἀγαπάω@[verb first plural] and look at the results. It looks like that might be what's happening.

Hmmmm.... someone else will hopefully weigh in with indications as to why this is the way it is. I'll have to mull over how to trim the list. Nothing strikes me immediately.

Thx

D

The number in parentheses represents the actual number of found hits in your search, while the concordance lists the location of this word everywhere it is found.

Zach, unfortunately there is no direct way to do what you are requesting right now. We have plans to add an option to concordance to only show the found hits, but until then there is no directly automated way to accomplish what you want. There are three similar results, but none of them are exactly what you are looking for:

1) Your search tab will already show all hit terms and the verses they are in, and you can export this information is a variety of sources. However, this is sorted by verse reference, not by found word.

2) The analysis tab can show you a plethora of information about each individual hit term, but it does not show the references of each hit.

3) The concordance tab shows you the references of each word, but isn't as customizable as the analysis, and currently concords the entire text or search range.

To help you maybe find a good workaround, what is the purpose of such a massive list? Searching my AF-T gives 220 different verbs, each of which generally found multiple times. Is compiling the massive list your end goal (say for publishing as a database) or are you perhaps trying to find something else in the end?

Joel,

Thanks for the heads up.

I'm trying to compile the list for an academic research project. In general I am looking for:

  • [VERB first plural]
  • [VERB second plural]
  • [PRONOUN first plural]
  • [PRONOUN second plural]
  • [ADJECTIVE plural possessive]

The list is a goal in itself, but it will be utilized to further analyze the content.

Thanks for the information, Zach. Generally, long lists are usually not as useful in and of themselves. For example, it would be very easy just to take your Analysis tab of each search to get a list of the terms, if needed for documentation or reference. But lets say you end up having your massive list of all 220 terms and all of their references x 5 for each of your searches. This isn't a reasonable list to work through by hand - its used for lookup. At this point, staying Accordance makes things much easier at that point, and you aren't missing your list.

If you amplify from the analysis tab, it is a "smart" amplify - searching for that particular instance. So, you could just select one of the found words in the amplify tab, do an amplify (Control-4) and it will instantly find your cases. This is much faster than selecting your reference in your list, copying and pasting it back into Accordance, and then running your search.

Thats just one example, but trying to show the nature of my point. Now, I'm not trying to say that your request is a bad idea - we've been wanting to optionally limit the Concordance to the search results for a while, and I think its getting close to the top of the list. But, we just have so far had higher priority items take precedence. So, I encourage you to maybe step back and see if you have other ways of getting to your results and analysis without requiring the long list.

If you do end up wanting to make the long list, I'm having trouble thinking of easy ways to accomplish it. Honestly, the best I can think of is to select each word in the analysis, run your search, and copy the references. Its a bit monotonous, but might be the best you can do for now.

When I highlight from the analysis tab and amplify via control-4 it brings back all forms of the word. For instance, when you amplify "ἀγανακτέω" it returns 2 items ἀγανακτέω (which pres. act. inf) & ἀγανακτῶμεν (which is 1 plural pres, act, subj--what i'm looking for). Is there a way to amplify and just return the item I'm looking for?

I have another program that does list the lemma and reference, but unfortunately it does not list the definition of the lemmas concurrently (which Accordance does). Can't have it both ways I guess :)

Well, I guess you can't have it both ways for right now. As I said its on our list, so hopefully you'll get it sooner rather than later.

Regarding the smart amplify, I forgot that it does a search based on your current analysis breakdown. So, customize your analysis tab (control-T or the gear menu) and drag in the Person and Number elements to your first column, before the LEX option. This specifies that you want to sort your results by Person and Number first, then Lex. While a bit redundant in your display, since your VERB search already restricts your results to Person and Number, it lets the amplify know which type of amplification you want.

Hit OK and you'll then be able to smart amplify more accurately.

Hey Zach,

I played with this a little more. It's possible to save output in the search tab and that in the concordance. With some scripting then you could merge the two files producing a concordance of just the desired results.

After selecting all text in each pane under File->Save Selection As you can save the text to separate files. You can control some aspects of the pane display in each case to optimize the output to simplify the post-processing a bit.

There are two thorns : one, the formatting is not such that you can just paste them into a spreadsheet and have the verse refs appear in their own column which would simplify matters. So you need to do a bit more string processing. You need an extractor for the verse refs. I have one in Python that I've been playing with which I use to canonicalise the ref formats across tools for comparison of search results with Grammar examples. The second is alas a little more of a problem. In your query you have results in your concordance that you don't want (not first plurals) but which refer to verses which contain other verbs in first plural which you do want. To ensure things are correlated correctly and the weeding out works properly you'll need to string compare the results for the concordance entry with those of the search results.

Its all doable enough I believe but it'll take a few tries.

Thx

D

  • 4 months later...

Another question for you guys. When I utilized the Concordance feature, the Greek word that is returned is labeled as the "lemma" and the english definition is the "gloss," correct?

Also, the definitions that are returned, what resource do they arise out of? I have Mounce and Strong, but the definitions don't match either, as far as I can tell at least.

Hi Zach, the gloss meanings come from our own lists. Not sure of the provenance, but you are correct that it’s not Mounce or Strong. They existed long before those resources were in Accordance.

Yes, the headword is the Lemma (also called Lex or Lexeme). The brief English meaning is the gloss. It is not meant to be anything other than a reminder/pointer. Like the glosses at the back of UBS4 etc.

Thanks for the direction.

I'm citing the gloss for a project and didn't know who I should credit the defintion to other than "Accordance."
