Evernote anyone?

Recommended Posts

I could have just as easily posted this under the general "Windows Wisdom" forum since Evernote is available on just about every platform available.

Today while I was driving, I enjoyed listening to Leo Laporte interview Phil Liben, CEO of Evernote on the newest Triangulation podcast.

I appreciated hearing Libin describe his very practical business sense and thoughts on the future of software. I had never thought about the fact that the Evernote programmers do not try to make a carbon copy of the program on every platform, but rather attempt to use the specific conventions of the platform in the development of each of the different versions of Evernote. This reminded me of Accordance, which uses separate Mac and Windows conventions according to which version you use; and of course, the iOS version is unique in its own right to iOS standards.

I find myself using Evernote in an increasing manner, and it's certainly a daily use program like Accordance.

Here is the link for Triangulation. Look for episode 170 if you want to hear the interview with Phil Libin.

Evernote and Accordance are a must.

All my sermon material is copied into an Evernote file including images, text and references. After my Accordance research I then do the same with the internet. Having collected everything into one file, the actual sermon construction is so much easier.

Also, any information that is of general interest from Accordance immediately gets copied to Evernote.

p.s. A little utility called 'Popclip' means I just highlight the text in Accordance and I get a 'Copy to Evernote' option.

Thanks for the link, Rick. I use Evernote off and on, very irregularly. However, the podcast was VERY interesting, and I think I will be revisiting Evernote more often.

Paul, that sounds really interesting. I don't use Evernote much, but am curious to hear more. Do you mind posting a few screenshots of what something from Accordance (image and text) looks like in Evernote?

And you use a citation copy so that you get citation info in Evernote, right? And images just go straight from Accordance to Evernote... and all in one file?

Sounds like it could be good for me. Only potential drawback could be--does that leave you with empty User Notes on a passage?

I've seen several offers to get Evernote for free or as part of a bundle, in fact I may even have a licence for it somewhere as part of a bundle, but have never found any use for it.

90% of Evernote's features are free. If you want the premium features, it's $5/month.

You can download it for free on any desktop or mobile platform.

Abram, I'll be glad to be of help, but sadly it'll need to be into next week. Weekends are so busy.

... Meanwhile, you'll get some useful clips on youtube.

Thanks, Paul! I'll look forward to hearing more--I'm sure others here might like to hear about your integration of Accordance and Evernote, too.

My current sermon prep workflow is Accordance (and Logos and BibleWorks for some resources) --> Scrivener to organize everything and outline it --> Nisus Writer Pro for final editing and paring down of the outline. Always interested in making it more efficient, though. I do also use OmniFocus and occaionally Evernote to help track photos/text reminders of sermon illustrations (which come as I'm on the go, usually), which I then input into a sermon illustrations User Tool in Accordance.

I always take notes in Evernote and would like to have it integrated with Accordance (like Olivetree Bible Reader).

After reviewing, I take my final notes in Devonthink Pro, where I have several databases (like OT grouped by Book or by Subjects like Legal Metaphors).

DP is a very stable database where I can put in documents (like articles from theological journals) in the directory I want. Searching is extremely fast.

Thank you, Hans--that looks great.

Simple question--I assume Devonthink syncs across devices, yes? Or no? Also, any way to access via iOS?

I quit using Devonthink Pro in the last year because they did not have a satisfactory (to me) online strategy. There is a mobile app, and you can create your own servers; but this was not as efficient (again, to me) as being able to upload content into Evernote and have it immediately available on any screen I looked at--even someone else's screen if necessary.

In regard to the DTP mobile app, I never found it useful. It was basically a document reader that files had to be moved to, but the reality is that there are better document viewers on the iPad such as GoodReader.

Devonthink Pro is still probably the best document database I've ever used, but Evernote has been much more practical and efficient for my uses. I didn't transition from Devonthink Pro to Evernote overnight. I did it gradually, using both for a number of years until I just decided it would be better to have everything in one place. It's only been a few months ago that I completely moved everything out of DTP into Evernote, deleting the former completely from my Mac.

Wow! That's awesome. Sounds like a lot of work to get everything out of DTP, but having everything in one place (accessible from anywhere) makes a lot of sense--certainly makes for less mental clutter.

Does DTP at least sync (using Dropbox? or something else?) across two computers?

DTP is older than Evernote and still superior in some ways. However, it did not (and in my opinion still has not) adapted to the way that mobile computing has really changed things in little more than a half decade.

Consider that this morning I was at an IWU faculty development session. They told us to bring laptops, but I really didn't need a laptop. Normally, I would have used my iPad and Logitech keyboard, but I'm still experimenting with how much I can do with an iPhone 6 Plus. So, using my iPhone and the iWerkz portable keyboard I got from you, Abram, I sat there taking notes using Evernote. I was able to switch to Accordance during the beginning devotional to double-check the Hebrew word the speaker referenced (he was correct).

My notes in Evernote from this morning are automatically synced and accessible from any of my other devices. This is what we've come to expect from our content--we want access to it regardless of what platform or device we're using.

DTP would sync over wifi with the iPad app, but I don't know if it would sync computer to computer. Of course, again, you could set up a server for access--more than I wanted to do.

Cool! So basically you can fit it all in a large pants pocket or satchel compartment or man-purse or something and carry it with you. :)

Rick, thank for clarifying some issues with Devonthink. I have some large databases here (some 20+ GB) with lots of articles.

I do not use the iPad app frequently. I use the build in Webserver to access my docs online.

Big fan of Evernote, and along with Accordance, it's an everyday app.

Rather than using it for exegetical work though, I typically use mine for homiletical work. I have a robust tagging system that allows me quick access to illustrations & quotes pulled from the internet, journals, articles, and books that I have read.

The web clipper is a great way to quickly add illustration-worthy news info, and as you can see in the attached picture, including references to different books (and page numbers) makes it helpful to refer back and remember all that I've read recently (at least all that I've read and care to remember!). May take a bit of time to process each book, but it's far worth the time saved months and years down the road.

I've used Evernote almost exclusively for the last 5 years. For college, sermons, study, reminder lists...

They are also pretty good at support despite never having received a cent from me!

Search works so well I've given up on folders and simply search it like I do Gmail (I do use tags when I remember).

The only time I use a word processor is to make it look pretty for printing.

  • 2 weeks later...

My purpose of visiting the forum today was to post a feature request for Evernote integration with Accordance. I was glad to see a thread had already been started.

Paul, thank you for the Popclip recommendation. I just downloaded the free trial that comes with 150 uses. Looks like a great tool, I'll most likely end up purchasing it.

I use Evernote quite a bit for jotting down seed thoughts to get back to later. This may be just a random thought or it may be while reading my Bible. Often the flow of my devotional reading gets 'interrupted' by rabbit trails I chase when something grabs my attention. I then loose the flow of the context. To maintain the continuity of my reading I will jot down the thought or item that interested me in Evernote to come back to later and flesh it out. After reaching 40 this is a must for me because I may never think about it again.

I said all that to express that it would be great to have Evernote integrated in the iOS app. I see that Olive Tree implements Evernote nicely with its notes system. It would be nice if the Accordance app offered something similar.

Perhaps now that Apple added extensibility to iOS 8, this will be easier than it would have been before. Of course, I'm no programmer.

Incidentally, it is possible to interact directly with Evernote from Accordance on the Mac desktop using OS X services:

I just started using OmniFocus. It's a lot at first to learn the terminology (Contexts, Projects, Forecast), but so worth it. I love it.

I have Evernote but haven't used it much. Any Evernote-OF integration tips are appreciated! What would I gain from using Evernote that I can't already have/do in Accordance and OmniFocus? Is it the chance to save a note or tidbit of information or Website?

And, for that matter, maybe DevonThink could provide that missing piece?

Rick, can you say more about Services and Evernote? Could I, for example, use Services to save an image in Accordance directly to Evernote?

I just tested it with ZIBBCOT, and it looks like the Evernote service works with text only, not graphics.
