Das Umlautmonster, K

I was just trying to find out if mein Accordancemonster had an article by Andreas J. Köstenberger, aus dem Bulletin für Biblical Research. When I put "Andreas J. Köstenberger" in the Library Search fenster, nothing resulted. So I brought up the BBR module and entered the name for name search of the module; to my surprise again I got nothing. After fiddling with it a bit, it appeared that the search function didn't like the umlaut & that deumlautification was required for the search. I had copied & pasted the name Andreas J. Köstenberger from another Accordance module which had the umlaut.

Is this a general bug in library search? Should a general library search bring up authors of journal articles? And in searching a particular module, is it that Accordance can't handle the umlaut?

"Köstenberger" without quotes works fine. Try that. Umlauts are recognized.

I have a similar issue when searching for transliterated text e.g. in HALOT. š, ṣ, ḫ, ḥ, ṯ, ṭ and so on are all recognized as s, h and t, respectively. And it's not possible for me to neither type or copy these alternate letters in searches - it always comes out as something different, mostly gibberish signs or square boxes. There is, of course, an advantage to the fact that Accordance doesn't differentiate between the various s, h and t-sounds seeing that it's easier to type in the regular letters rather than the specific versions. Also, if you aren't sure which specific sound you're looking for, it's better to get all the possible results.

Still, I would very much like to be able to toggle between this current "mode" and a mode where I can type š, ṣ, ḫ, ḥ, ṯ, ṭ, ḍ, ḏ, ġ etc. in searches for specific results.

With kind regards

Pchris

*Edit*

Oddly enough, it is not possible to type ö in transliteration searches, but the Danish ø works just fine. Go figure! Accordance still treats it like a regular o in the search results, though.

Oh, and I really like the title of this thread - it made me chuckle quite a bit
