I had this little chat with the online support team, but to no avail. Can anyone here help me with this question:

Thomas: [11:14] Question: In the Qumran Index, when you click on a link to a fragment (such as 4Q11), the individual verses for that manuscript are brought up. There are references listed beside each given verse that look this: 3:7, 4:6, etc. These references do not correspond to the actual chapter and number of the verse. What do the correspond to? Column and line number?
Angela: [11:17] Hello Thomas...I am not too familiar with the Qumran text, but I can open up the index and take a look. Can you provide a specific verse or reference I can look at?
Thomas: [11:19] Sure. 4Q14 is the manuscript.
[11:19] If you search for it and then click on the hyperlinked "4Q14" when it is found it should open up a side-box with a list of every line of text that is found in that manuscript.
[11:20] If you find the line of text that represents Exodus 10:8, there should be another reference beside the verse that reads "3:9".
[11:21] Since this obviously does not refer to Exodus 10:8, I am wondering if it refers to the column and line number of the manuscript. I need to know because I am referencing it in a publication that requires the column and line numbers to be written in a different way.

"3:9" does indeed refer to column number and line number, respectively. If you look at the DSS Index, it states:

4Q14 (4QExodc) 4Q Exodusc

Related Manuscripts: 1Q2, 2Q2, 2Q3, 2Q4, 4Q11, 4Q13, 4Q15, 4Q16, 4Q17, 4Q18, 4Q19, 4Q20, 4Q21, 4Q22

Description: Exo 7:17–19 (frag. 1, col. I); Exo 7:20–23 (frag. 2, 3, col. I); Exo 7:26–8:1 (frag. 4, col. I); Exo 8:5–11 (frag. 5, 6, col. I); Exo 8:12–14 (frag. 7, col. I); Exo 8:16–18 (frag. 8, 9, col. I); Exo 8:22 (frag. 10, col. II); Exo 9:10–12 (frag. 11, col. II); Exo 9:15–20 (frag. 12–15, col. II); Exo 9:22–25 (frag. 16, col. II); Exo 9:27–35 (frag. 17–19, col. II); Exo 10:1–5 (frag. 20, 21, col. III); Exo 10:7–9 (frag. 22, 23, col. III); Exo 10:12–19 (frag. 24–28, col. III); Exo 10:23–24 (frag. 29, col. III); Exo 11:9–10 (frag. 30, col. IV); Exo 12:12–16 (frag. 31, col. IV); Exo 12:31–48 (frag. 32, col. V); Exo 13:18–14:3 (frag. 33, col. V); Exo 14:3–13 (frag. 32ii, col. VI); Exo 14:9–11 (frag. 34, col. VI); Exo 15:9–21 (frag. 33ii, col. VI); Exo 17:1–18:12 (frag. 35, col. VIII); Exo 18:4–6 (frag. 36, col. VIII)

Language: Hebrew.

Paleography/Date: late Hasmonaean/early Herodian, 50–25 B.C.E.

Bibliography: J. E. Sanderson, DJD XII, 97–125. Plates XVI-XX.

Also, if you look at Exo 10:23–24 (frag. 29, col. III) and then Exo 11:9–10 (frag. 30, col. IV) in the DSS Bible Manuscripts, you can see that it changes numbers from 3 to 4, matching the DSS Index:

4Q14 3:27

and then

4Q14 4:1

With kind regards
Peter Christensen

Peter, one more thing if you can help. I have the same question concerning another fragment (4Q82). This time, there aren't any parenthetical notations explaining the physical place of each verse reference in the manuscript. The verse I'm concerned with is Jonah 4:5. The reference given by the verse reference looks like this: [4Q82 f88_91i:2]. Does "f" stand for fragment and the 2 the line number? If so, how do I know which fragment this actually corresponds to? I tried looking for this fragment designation on the Levy Database (http://www.deadseascrolls.org.il/explore-the-archive/manuscript/4Q82-1), but with no luck. I guess it would be helpful if I could find out what published work Accordance is following with these designations.

Thanks for the previous help. Hope you've got something for me this time as well.

Thomas

Yes, we're dealing with a different indexing system here as opposed to manuscripts. Fragments 76-91 have content from the Book of Jonah, so 88_91 means fragment 88 and 91.

..Actually, I just happened to find this in the module info (DSSB-C/DSSB-M: Important Notes for the Dead Sea Scrolls Biblical Corpus) which explains this a lot better than I could, so I'll just copy-paste the info here:

5. Current referencing schemes have been modified slightly to accommodate Accordance. This effects the referencing of DSSB-M only. Manuscripts published by column are recorded in a column:line format. Thus “1QIsaa 4:3” references the manuscript known as 1QIsaa column 4, line 3. The more common fragmentary portions follow the pattern of fragment column: line. Thus “1Q4 f6ii:3” refers to manuscript 1Q4, fragment (f) 6, column 2, and line 3. Only the fragment number will show variation from this pattern as the characters + and _ are incorporated to show combinations of individual fragments. For example, “1Q4 f7_8:1” refers to an ensemble of fragments 7 and 8.

With kind regards

Peter,

Thanks, again! I've been working on a school-owned computer that has the Qumran Index. Obviously, I've been having trouble navigating my way through due to unfamiliarity. You've been a great help!

Gratefully,

Thomas
