I am wondering why spacing in various versions is so different in the Psalms. For example (see attachments), NIV84 has no built-in line breaks. NIV11 has line breaks, but no paragraph breaks. ESV has both line breaks and paragraph breaks. (“Set Text Display…” settings are all the same—paragraphs with space.)

I find this simultaneously fascinating yet confusing because I have print copies of all of the above, and all of them have both line breaks and paragraph breaks.

Why do the NIVs (plural) not reflect their print editions?

I know I can change the display settings of the NIV84 so it has line breaks (or at least verse breaks), but is there anything that can be done (whether on my end or yours) to fix the differences?

Thank you!

The NIV-G/K (1984) had no poetic formatting when it was developed; there are no plans to change that.

The ESV in this case contains extra paragraph marks at the verses, which when displayed as 'paragraphs with space' adds an additional line ending. The NIV11 does not contain these extra marks, and hence does not add an extra space. I am not sure which one is technically right in this case. We would have to look into it further. Note that if you display both as 'paragraphs' they look the same.

This is unrelated to the user bible issue Fabian posted about elsewhere.
