Jonna Schmidt Posted January 17, 2016 Share Posted January 17, 2016 Hi I am taking Biblical Greek with Dr. Mounce, and I had two questions: 1. I have Basics of Biblical Greek through Accordance, and the Accordance Module pretty much EXACTLY matches the text through Chapters 21. Starting in chapter 21... my textbook still is complete, but Accordance just seems to have a "Cliff notes version" of the book. Is that intentional? Some sort of bug? 2. Dr. Mounce wants us to learn those words which occur more than 20-times in the GNT. I know how do a "word count search", and I can search for words than are used LESS THAN 20 times. I can enter [COUNT 1-20] -- and I get a wonderful search! The problem: Dr. Mounce wants me to learn words that are used TWENTY-PLUS times, and I can not figure out how to do the search. Do I need to do something fancy with those CONTENTS and HITS commands? Again: my goal is just to get a list of those GNT words that are used more than 20-times in the GNT. thank you in advance for your suggestions. I was just wondering if Accordance can give me a search that includes ONLY words used more than 20 times. I am going to "brush up" on those HITS commands. Jonna Schmidt Posted January 18, 2016 Author Share Posted January 18, 2016 Sorry if I was not clear. I am trying to get a "vocabulary list" for my Greek New Testament class, using Accordance. It has been really hard for me to learn all those inflected forms. I was never a good student at English (I guess that shows with my posts tonight!), and this Greek class has been very hard for me. So.. since we need to learn all words that are used in the GNT more than 20 times: I wanted to start with a "vocabulary list". I can easily make a list of words that are used UNDER 20 times by using the COUNT command. I have that down! PRAISE THE LORD!!! However.... I want a list of words that are used MORE THAN 20 times, and either I am totally missing something: but the COUNT command will not do this. So... how can I get my list -- using Accordance? I have THREE TABS: TAB 1: this includes all GNT words used 1-20 times. See attachment #1 (Also called GNT 1) TAB 2: this includes ALL GNT words (GNT 2) TAB 3: this supposed to include: all words found in GNT-2 but NOT found in GNT-1 I keep getting error messages. What am I doing wrong? Or, is this something that Accordance can not provide? That's Okay!!! I just need to know so that I can move-on. THANKS!!!! I think that somehow -- I can get better results -- which are more elegant - but I just can NOT understand what I need to do. Quite a few years ago: I went to an Accordance seminar, and I learned how to do a search such that: I can find the words that are used ONLY ONE TIME in the GNT -- within a passage, such as Romans. I wrote this down, because this was very important to me. First: do a word search in the GNT which includes ALL WORDs in the desired passage such as ROMANS. Then, do word search of the GNT which includes just ONE instance (using the count-command). Then, do a CONTENTS search such that you combine the CONTENTS of the first search with the CONTENTS of the second search. Viola! You have your list of all words that are listed only ONCE in the GNT -- and also in ROMANS. Granted... with the COUNT command: you can just take your search -- and scroll to Romans. Tonight, I did a similar search such that I just did a GNT>> WORDS>> COUNT 21-10000), and I think that I now have a list of all words used more than 20 times in the GNT. Here are the results of my search. Is there any way that I can verify that I have it correct? anyway... my goal is just to make sure that I did the search correctly so that: I have all Greek words memorized/learned which occur more than 20-times in the GNT. Thank you in advance. Also, if someone has a more direct search method, that would be appreciated. Here I was stressing over these HITS commands and CONTENTS commands -- and COUNT 20+ -- that totally worked!!! Thanks so much!!! Will get back to studying!!! By the grace of God -- I will finish the class -- but I suspect NOT TIMELY!!! Fortunately, I am not looking for seminary credit -- I just want to be a better Sunday School teacher!!! Ken Simpson Posted January 18, 2016 Share Posted January 18, 2016 Hi Jonna, it’s a cute adjustment to the COUNT command format that is relatively recent (last couple of years). Before that you had to specify an impossibly high second item like [COUNT 20-20000] Re your pics that you uploaded in the previous posts, if you upload them as jpg’s or png’s then we will be able to see thumbnails and click on them to view them without downloading. That would be preferable to the tiff’s you are uploading. (and smaller too!). And regarding your *long* post about ways around this, the alternative does work but I can’t figure out from your description what you are saying... To find words used 20 or more times you only need one tab with [COUNT 20+] To find words used only once you search for [COUNT 1]. What you are doing with HITS is needed only to compare searches, for example all the words in Exodus that were not used in Genesis. Remember that the range you use with [COUNT] will affect the results. If you use the [RANGE] command with [COUNT], the count actually looks at the entire text. For example [COUNT 1] [RANGE Mark] finds words which occur once in Mark, but [COUNT 1] with the range pop-up menu set to Mark finds words in Mark which occur once in the entire text, i.e. do not occur elsewhere. I was just seeing if I could help Jonna understand why the search she was doing threw an error. Hence the overly complicated alternative arrangement.
